Malaysian badminton players banned 20, 15 years for match-fixing

Two Malaysian badminton players have been hit with career-ending bans of 20 and 15 years respectively after being found guilty of corruption and match-fixing, the sport's governing body said today. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli, 25, was banned for 20 years and fined $25,000, while Tan Chun Seang, 31, was barred for 15 years and fined $15,000. The were found guilty of breaching the BWF code of conduct in relation to "betting, wagering and irregular match results", said a statement from the body. A BWF ethics panel, which held hearings in February in Singapore into the case, found both players "engaged in corruption offences over a significant period and a significant number of tournaments" dating back to 2013. Zulfadli committed more violations over a longer period and it was proven he had manipulated the results of four matches, the BWF said. Their suspension began from January 12, the date on which both players were ...

D/N Test: India reluctant because they want to win, says CA: So what? asks BCCI

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland today said India's refusal to play a day-night Test during the series later this year is driven by a desperation to win Down Under even as the BCCI stayed firm in its rejection of the proposed match. Sutherland feels that it is CA's prerogative to decide on the pink ball Test against India at Adelaide from December 6-10 but BCCI Committee of Administrators' chief Vinod Rai once again made it clear that the game will not take place. "I think personally the home country should have the right to schedule matches as it sees fit and start them at whatever time of day they want," Sutherland told SEN Radio. When CoA chief Rai was contacted by PTI, he said: "I don't think BCCI's stand will change. As it has already been decided, Day/Night pink ball matches will continue at the first-class level. Duleep Trophy will be played under lights once again." Rai, however, said that India's reluctance to play Day/Night Test does not imply that the two boards are ..

Lahiri back in action at Wells Fargo; Tiger ready with new set of irons

Anirban Lahiri will make yet another attempt to salvage his season as he returns to competition at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club. Lahiri began the season late last year well with Top-10s at CIMB Classic and CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges, but since has been found wanting. With the competition scheduled a week before the PLAYERS Championships, the flagship event of the PGA Tour, Lahiri knows it is an important outing to get himself into the right frame for the coming week. While Lahiri is trying to ensure that he does not have to struggle at the end of the season to get to the FedEX Cup, where he made the third leg last year, there is also Tiger Woods, looking stronger each week. It is a solid field with Rory McIlroy looking solid and Jason Day also being touted as one of the favourites. The field includes Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson besides Tony Finau who has been consistent and knocking on the door. Lahiri will be one of the early starters

Dynamos part ways with head coach Portugal

Delhi Dynamos has released its head coach Miguel Angel Portugal of Spain following the team's disappointing outing in the 2017-18 Indian Super League. Dynamos issued a statement today to announce that the club has parted ways with Portugal by mutual consent. Despite a slow start to the ISL Season 4, Portugal rallied back his troops after the turn of the year as the Lions went unbeaten in eight out of the 11 matches played in 2018. Under the Spaniard, Dynamos were the fourth highest scorers in the tournament. But both the club and Portugal agreed that the results overall were not upto the mark this season. The club finished eighth in the league standings and were beaten in the qualifying rounds of the inaugural Hero Super Cup and it was in the best interest of the two parties to go their separate ways. I had a very memorable time here in Delhi Dynamos and in the ISL. The club showed great belief in my abilities this season and even though we didn't win the trophy, the fans were happy ..

Dhoni's turn-around sensational, says Chopra

Former India batsman Aakash Chopra believes that Chennai Super Kings have the best batting unit in this year's Indian Premier League and the way their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has rewound the clock is sensational. "Chennai Super Kings is one side who are playing with only five batsmen and they are still good enough to score 200 runs nine out of 10 times. So they (CSK) currently is the best batting unit in the IPL," Chopra told PTI after launching the "Aakash Chopra Official App", in collaboration with US-based tech firm, EscapeX. For table toppers CSK, the top and middle-order have clicked -- with Australian Shane Watson, Ambati Rayadu, Suresh Raina, skipper Dhoni and West Indian Dwayne Bravo all having scored runs when needed. Chopra also said that he was pleasantly surprised with the way Dhoni has turned things around. "I am pleasantly surprised. Harender lacks enough time to change team's fortunes: Joaquim

Welcoming the appointment of Harender Singh as the coach of the Indian men's national hockey team, former coach Joaquim Carvalho wondered whether he has enough time on his hands to fine tune the squad for tougher battles ahead. Yesterday, women's coach Harender Singh was made in- charge of the men's side, while men's coach Sjoerd Marijne was re-designated the women's coach in a rejigging of roles by the Hockey India following the medalless show of the teams at last month's Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. "Harender's appointment as a coach is a good move because he is in tune with all the latest happenings of Indian hockey and knows all the Indians players. The only drawback is whether he will have enough time to prepare the team for the Asian Games and other tournaments," Carvalho told PTI today. India are set to take part in two major events till the year-end - the Asian Games in Jakarta in August followed by the World Cup in Bhubaneshwar in November-December. Giving the

Let him decide: Vinod Rai on Virat Kohli's English County stint

Vinod Rai, member of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), on Wednesday said, it depends on Indian skipper Virat Kohli whether he wants to represent India in the one-off Test against Afghanistan or he wants to play county cricket to prepare for the marquee series against England."CoA has taken a conscious decision to encourage the players, especially test specialists, to play county and hone their skills for the England series. No question of stopping them to play versus Afghanistan. The team that played in Sri Lanka will play versus Afghanistan," Rai told ANI."Afghanistan is playing versus India and not Virat Kohli. No player (Cheteshwar Pujara especially) will be called back from UK to play versus Afghanistan. Priority is England and to do well there, so, whatever it takes.""Will not repeat the same mistake that happened versus South Africa. The working committee of the BCCI is us, so doesn't matter what they say or think," Rai added.India-Afghanistan Test ..
