Nadal swats aside Nishikori to seal 11th Monte Carlo crown

Rafael Nadal romped to a record-extending 11th Monte Carlo Masters title by brushing aside an outclassed Kei Nishikori in today's final to retain the world number one ranking. The 31-year-old saw off Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 to become the first man to win a single tournament 11 times in the Open era with his 76th ATP Tour title. Nadal's 31st Masters title is also an outright record, pulling him out of a tie with Novak Djokovic. "I know the day to say goodbye is closer than 10 years ago. Is something that I am not worried about, but it's a real thing," said Nadal, who was playing at his first ATP event since retiring from an Australian Open quarter-final against Marin Cilic with a hip injury in January. "So I'm just enjoying every day and trying to play with the best attitude possible, to keep being happy playing tennis." The 16-time Grand Slam champion's era of utter dominance on clay looks unlikely to end any time soon after Nadal took his run of consecutive sets won on the surface to ...

Keys sets up US Fed Cup final with Czech Republic

Madison Keys saw off France's Pauline Parmentier to fire the United States into the Fed Cup final where the Czech Republic lie in wait for the defending champions. Keys, 13th in the world, defeated the 122nd-ranked Parmentier 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 to earn the US a 3-1 win in Aix-en-Provence. Sloane Stephens had put the US on the verge of the final after brushing aside Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 6-0 in today's first rubber. It was world number 20 Mladenovic who had given France a fighting chance when ending Coco Vandeweghe's 13-match Fed Cup win streak to pull France level at 1-1 on Saturday. But she was unable to repeat those heroics against the US Open champion who had given the Americans their first point when defeating Parmentier 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 in Saturday's opening match. Earlier, Petra Kvitova put the Czech Republic into a sixth Fed Cup final in eight years following her win against Angelique Kerber in the other semi-final in Stuttgart. Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, needed just .

Indian Tigers finally roar in WSB, back-to-back wins over Russia, China

It was an unprecedented success for India at the World Series of Boxing (WSB) as the country's franchise -- the Indian Tigers -- recorded two consecutive victories, outwitting Russia and China in the weekend clashes here. After edging past Russia's Patriot Boxing Team 3-2 late last night, the Indian Tigers hammered group laggards China Dragons 4-1 with former Commonwealth Games silver medallist Mandeep Jangra (75kg) and 19-year-old Mohammed Etash Khan (56kg) recording impressive wins over Haerheng Wulepar and Boxiang Zhu respectively. With two back-to-back wins, the Indian Tigers, winless before this weekend, are still in with a chance of making the WSB play-offs for which only the top eight franchises will qualify. India are currently placed ninth in the standings and still have the away leg tie against the Chinese franchise on April 27 left on their schedule. Should the team win that clash, there is a real possibility of it making the play-offs, which would be a first for India in .

ICC asks Mithali if she has ever experienced any approach by bookies

Indian women's cricket captain Mithali Raj was today asked whether she has ever experienced any approach by the bookies to fix a match as the ICC's five-day meeting got underway here. Mithali was here as a 'special invitee' as the ICC's quarterly meeting began with discussions on women's cricket. "She was here for a small part during the meeting. She was asked whether she has encountered any instances of match fixing. She said she has not till date," an ICC official said. Since Under-19 and women's matches are being televised more and more, ICC wants to take precautionary measures. Before any ICC event, even the U-19 and women's teams have to attend the classes of the ICC integrity unit on how to tackle corrupt approaches. While the focus is more on U-19s as it's about teenagers, women's game is also becoming popular due to live coverage on television. ICC wants more and more live coverage of women's game and hence the need for checks and balances. Mithali painted a picture of ...

Indian Tigers beat China Dragons 4-1 in WSB

Mandeep Jangra defeated Haerheng Wulepaer of China Dragons to register his first ever win in the World Series of Boxing format and guide the India Tigers to second consecutive victory here. The India Tigers emerged 4-1 victorious at the National Boxing Academy here. The 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Mandeep (75 kg) looked in ferocious form as he set off from the word go and looked to finish his opponent off early on. He nonchalantly kept landing his powerful punches as the Chinese tried to step up to his pace. It was sheer power from Mandeep as he dominated the proceedings, whereas the Chinese had no answers except to lock his arm for which he was even warned. The Indian kept on attacking, giving no respite to the Chinese and eventually won 3:0. Earlier, Mohammad Etash Khan walloped Boxiang Zhu by a unanimous decision to hand the Tigers an unassailable 3-1 lead in their encounter against China Dragons. In the high intensity bantamweight clash, Khan lived up to his favourite

Mumbai Indians struggle to 167/7 after fifties from Yadav and Kishan

Suryakumar Yadav and young Ishan Kishan hit measured half-centuries but Mumbai Indians frittered away a good platform to settle for a modest 167 for seven against Rajasthan Royals in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match, here today. Mumbai Indians lost Evin Lewis in the first over the match after electing to bat but Yadav (72) and Kishan (58) raised a 129-run partnership, setting up the platform for a challenging total. The partnership broke when Kishan, who led India in the Under-19 World Cup, lost his wicket while trying an adventurous shot off Dhawan Kulkarni (2/32) and from there the visitors lost track. The left-hander's innings came off 42 balls with four fours and three shots over the fence while Yadav faced 47 balls and hit nine boundaries including three sixes. The stage was set for a perfect finish but Mumbai Indians lost three wickets in space of eight balls. After Kishan went back to dug out, Yadav was dismissed by Unadkat and captain Rohit Sharma ran himself out after ...
