A decision by Sachin's father that changed his life, Indian cricket: Book

It was the summer of 1984 when a decision by Professor Ramesh Tendulkar -- to let his youngest child Sachin switch school changed the boy's life. The anecdote finds a mention in a new book, Winning like Sachin: Think & Succeed like Tendulkar', authored by Devendra Prabhudesai. Sachin was just 11 when his elder brother Ajit took him to coach Ramakant Achrekar, who was of the view that young boy had it in him to go a long way in the sport and it was therefore prudent that he be given access to competitive cricket. The issue was that Bandra IES, the English-medium school in Mumbai where Sachin studied, did not have a cricket team. Achrekar recommended that Sachin be shifted to Shardashram Vidyamandir, whose English-and Marathi-medium cricket teams were coached by him, the book says. Sachin's residence at Sahitya Sahawas in Bandra was a fair distance away from Shardashram in Dadar. There was no bus that plied between the two locations directly, which meant that Sachin would have to ..

Kohli disappointed despite amassing highest IPL runs

Virat Kohli became the highest run-getter in Indian Premier League during his 92-run innings against Mumbai Indians but the star batsman said it doesn't really matter as his effort couldn't ensure a victory for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli's 62-ball knock went in vain as RCB finished at 167-9 in 20 overs while chasing MI's 213-6, built largely around skipper Rohit Sharma's 52-ball 94. This was their third defeat in four matches with a 46-run loss. "I don't feel like wearing this (orange cap) right now because it really doesn't matter," said Kohli, who took his IPL total to 4,619 runs in 153 matches, surpassing Chennai Super Kings' Suresh Raina (4,558). "We got off to a great start but we just threw it away, and need to reflect on our dismissals. We knew there would be a little bit of dew, we needed not your 40-45s but 80-85s. In the end it was all about making sure that the run-rate doesn't take a hit; credit to Mumbai though, they bowled really well." Kohli said Mumbai Indians .

Opening innings is big plus for me: Wriddhiman

Test specialist Wriddhiman Saha reckons that opening the batting for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a big positive for him. Saha has earlier opened the batting for Kings XI Punjab and even scored a hundred in a losing cause during the 2013 IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders. "I like to play my natural game. The coach (Tom Moody) and captain (Kane Williamson) have backed me on this and I have got opportunity to open the innings, which is a plus point. They have told me to play with freedom and play my natural shots," Saha told PTI here. Saha has so far scored 51 runs in three games with scores of 5, 22 and 24 respectively. Asked if he would continue opening the innings, Saha replied:"This depends on team management. If I do well as an opener, I will be entrusted to take up the responsibility but if I don't come up to their expectations, then they may think of other options. But I want to even better my performance." Saha was generous in his ...

Dropping shooting from 2022 CWG will affect young shooters: Rai

Impressed with the performance of the Indian shooting contingent in Gold Coast, ace marksmen Jitu Rai is worried about the adverse effect that non-inclusion of the sport in the 2022 Birmingham Games will have on young talents. "We win lot of medals in shooting (at the CWGs). Look at the kids who are doing so well and they will only do better as they go along. So it saddens me that shooting won't be a part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. It will affect young medal prospects of our country," Jitu told PTI during an interaction organised by the Indian Army. "But it is not in our hands. We can only shoot and that is what we are doing. Whether to include the sport or not, is in the hands of government (organisers). But I am still hopeful that it would be included," he said. The Indian Army today accorded a warm welcome to their sportspersons, who returned with medals for the 21st Commonwealth Games. Kane strikes, but Spurs held by Brighton

Kane fired Tottenham ahead in the 48th minute when his close-range shot deflected in off Brighton defender Bruno. It was Kane's 26th of the season and kept him in with a chance of catching Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who sits ahead of the Tottenham striker on 30 goals in the race to finish as the Premier League's top scorer. But Mauricio Pochettino's side, who face Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday, left the Amex Stadium frustrated after conceding an equaliser two minutes after Kane's opener. Albion drew level when Pascal Gross slotted home a penalty awarded for Serge Aurier's foul on Jose Izquierdo. Tottenham have gone two games without a league victory, but they are still in pole position to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top four finish. They are in fourth place, eight points ahead of fifth placed ...
