Cricket legend Rahul Dravid today said he is delighted to see young players getting a chance to play professional football alongside former international stars in the Indian Super League (ISL). Dravid, who was recently unveiled as Bengaluru FC's brand ambassador, attended his first ISL match yesterday and was impressed with the fan following the club and ISL has generated, terming it "fantastic" for Indian football. "It's great to see a lot of the young players coming through the academies and so many young Indian players are getting to play the game professionally at the highest level with so many international stars. Mario Gomez heads back to Stuttgart
Experienced German international striker Mario Gomez is to move to Stuttgart from Wolfsburg, rejoining the team he left eight years ago. Gomez, 32, came through the Stuttgart youth system and won the 2007 Bundesliga title with the club. "I am very happy to return home, to the place where it all began," he said. The transfer fee was around three million euros ($3.5 million), according to German sports agency SID. Gomez has scored 151 Bundesliga goals and has played 71 times for Germany, scoring 31 goals. "With Mario Gomez, we will have a scorer of the highest quality," Stuttgart's sporting director Michael Reschke said. Germany coach Joachim Loew left Gomez out of his 2014 World Cup squad, but recalled him for Euro 2016. Gomez abruptly left Besiktas in 2016 after the coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and joined the Volkswagen-backed Wolfsburg side.
Australia women team to tour India for ODIs, T20 tri-series
The Australian women's team will tour India in March 2018 to play three ODIs against the hosts as part of the ICC Women's Championship (2071-2020), the BCCI said today while announcing a T20 tri-series also involving England. The three One-day Internationals will be held from March 12 to March 18 in Baroda, while the tri-series will kick off with India taking on Australia on March 22. All the matches of the tri-series will be held in Mumbai, with the final slated for April 3. England will start their campaign with a match against Australia on March 24. "The Australian Women's Cricket Team will travel to India in March 2018 to take part in three ODIs against Indian Women's Cricket Team as part of the ICC Women's Championship (2017-2020). Wicketkeeper Tim Paine has joined pace spearhead Mitchell Starc as a doubt for Australia in the Boxing Day Test against England in Melbourne. Starc hobbled through Melbourne airport on crutches today cushioning a bruised heel but was not yet ready to concede defeat. "It won't be my choice," he told reporters, on his possible selection. The friction between the BCCI top brass and the Committee of Administrators (COA) again came to the forefront when the distribution of complimentary passes for the third India-Sri Lanka T20 International led to a tussle between the two sides. As per the BCCI rulebook, the president is entitled to 50 complimentary passes, including hospitality tickets, the secretary has 75 and the treasurer gets seven passes for matches. What has come under scanner is COA's letter "requesting" acting president CK Khanna and acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary to part with 25 complimentary passes each for the stakeholders during every international match, starting with the December 24 India-Sri Lanka tie.
