Putin extols 'hockey diplomacy', falls on ice

Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin praised "hockey diplomacy" as he scored nine goals in a game with his allies and Russian stars but fell on his face after the match. "It brings people closer," Putin told reporters during the hockey match, in footage broadcast on television Sunday evening. "This always helps." Wearing his traditional No. 11 jersey, the Russian president on Friday took to the ice for an exhibition game at the Bolshoi Ice Arena in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. The sports-mad 66-year-old leader, who has done a lot to promote a healthy lifestyle in Russia, said hockey was outside of politics and helped foster ties between statesmen. Putin said he could not even stand on ice several years ago and learned to skate by clutching a chair. Skating alongside Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russian hockey stars such as ..

Champions League glory would transform Spurs: Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino says winning the Champions League would change the "perception" of Tottenham Hotspur and provide a glorious ending to what he described as the best season in the five years he has been their manager. The 47-year-old Argentinian -- who has said he may walk away if the club fail to deliver a blueprint for keeping them competitive with the top teams -- has been praised for the style his team plays and his ability to develop young talent. But he has yet to win a trophy. This missing element in his CV could be filled by beating Liverpool in the June 1 final in Madrid. Overcoming last year's losing Champions League finalists and Premier League runners-up is a tall order. But history is beckoning, says Pochettino "I think we can make history," he said after Sunday's 2-2 draw with Everton which confirmed Spurs spot in next season's Champions League by finishing fourth. Indian men's hockey team draws 1-1 with Australia A

A late goal by dragflicker Harmanpreet Singh helped the Indian men's hockey team salvage a 1-1 draw against Australia 'A' here Monday. India made two good saves in the initial minutes of the first quarter while defending back-to-back penalty corners. The attempts somewhat made up for an average start by the visitors with the Australia 'A' attack putting the team under pressure right from the start. India suffered a setback in the 21st minute when Kiran Arunasalam struck a fine field goal for Australia 'A'. India's inability to convert chances created in the striking circle and missing out on three PCs dented their fightback. Their defence, on the other hand, was able to contain the home team from extending their lead. It was in Harmanpreet's second attempt, in the 56th minute, that saw him convert a well-timed, powerful dragflick to equalise. "We had a poor start in the first ten minutes of the game which was a complete opposite to how we played on Friday. We slowly got back into the .

I think he is bowling the best I have seen in his career."Tendulkar, who felt on the top of the world, however, acknowledged that the Rohit Sharma-led team was "Possibly about 15 runs short. Young leg-spinner Rahul Chahar earned lavish praise from none other than the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who termed him a "fabulous" talent, an opinion echoed by team's chief coach Mahela Jayawardene. Chahar bowled an astounding 13 dot balls finishing with superb figures of 1 for 14 in 4 overs, bringing Mumbai Indians back in the match. Those who have seen Chahar bowl a total of 81 overs in an Irani Cup game for Rest of India on a placid Jamtha track, swore by his talent. The 13 wickets in 13 games at an economy rate of 6.55 in shorter version proved his versatility across formats. "Rahul Chahar stands out. I shared my opinion (with Mahela) before he played his first game and I thought he was fabulous. We do understand that we are an ageing team: Fleming after 'scrappy season'

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has acknowledged the need for rebuilding an "ageing squad" after a poor show with the bat which has been their achilles heel through out the season. CSK squad with an average of 34 for the core team, has proved that age is just a number by winning the IPL last year and finishing runners-up to Mumbai Indians here on Sunday night. But as pointed out by both Fleming and skipper M S Dhoni, they could have done a lot more in the batting department. "We will give some time for dust to settle down. I think if you win one title and reach the final next time, you have had good two years. We do understand that we are an ageing team. So at some point, we just have to look at recreating the side, obviously MS as well, said Fleming following the one-run loss to Mumbai. Fleming said that the planning for next season will start after Mahendra Singh Dhoni is back from the World Cup. The former New Zealand skipper said that just like other teams have ...
