Is testosterone a male prerogative?

In a world that runs on patriarchal norms, where a man's success is more highlighted--often made blurry by the lack of any measurable yardstick--'sports' is one discipline where women have an equal sway with their achievements. For example, in India, more female athletes have brought home laurels at international events than their male counterparts. Yet, time and again, women are subjected to oppression in some form or the other, even in sports. In fact, it was the topic of discussion at the recent episode of "Talking Turkey with Kanthi," on Power Sportz. Touted as the boldest sports debate show in India, it is hosted by Kanthi D Suresh, Editor-in-chief of Power Sportz. The show debated on IAAF's hegemonic attempt to regulate testosterone levels in women athletes, and how the UN council has come down heavily on them. The IAAF wants to enforce that levels of testosterone among competing female athletes should be even. Women athletes with a higher level of testosterone would have to undergo

Umpires end to ensure IPL matches end on time: Mohammad Kaif

The umpires need to ensure that the matches of Indian Premier League (IPL) end on time, said Delhi Capitals' assistant coach Mohammad Kaif here on Wednesday. He also indicated that teams were misusing substitutes by replacing weaker fielders with stronger ones."Every match is finishing at 12 in the night. Umpires need to ensure that the match ends on time. Teams are taking up too much time on deciding which player should be fielded at what position," Kaif told reporters here."Players after bowling their quota of overs go out of the field and the team replaces them with good fielders, which eats up a lot of time," he said."During the match between Punjab and Delhi, we saw that Sarfaraz Khan did not come for fielding. He got hit on the hand, but I don't know how severe his injury was.""The new fielder which came out to field took an amazing catch, so teams are deliberately trying to introduce better fielders on the field to replace weaker ones and the umpires need to keep a check on ...

David Warner has shown a lot of resilience: Moody

David Warner worked on the mental and technical aspect of his game during the 12-month ban and has shown tremendous resilience to make a successful comeback after the ball-tampering scandal, Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody said Wednesday. Warner and Steve Smith were banned by Cricket Australia for a year, while Cameron Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension for their respective roles in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year. On road to redemption, Warner hit a purple patch, slamming 85, 69 and 100 in the last three IPL matches for Sunrisers and Moody said the Australian was preparing mentally and technically during his suspension. "I think we've seen over his career what makes him unique as a player. Yes, he's had to sit out of top-flight cricket, international cricket, for 12 months. But David Warner has been preparing for six months, too, for his comeback," Moody said. "He's played a couple of franchise tournaments over that 12-month period. He has ...

Sri Lanka's cricket board Wednesday fined captain Dimuth Karunaratne $7,000 after he was arrested for drink-driving, with the player also ordered to stand trial next month. Karunaratne, 30, has apologised for his "unbecoming" actions after he was detained for crashing into a three-wheel taxi on Sunday, leaving its driver injured. "Sri Lanka Cricket decided to impose a fine of $7,000 on Dimuth Karunaratne, after the player was found to have violated the 'Player Contractual Obligation,'" the board said in a statement. However, the board will take no further action as he had maintained a "very high professional standard as a player". A magistrate has suspended Karunaratne's driving licence and fixed a trial for May 2. The cricket star was also asked to take a medical test. Police told the court that Karunaratne went through a red light and hit the taxi whose driver was hospitalised for minor injuries after the pre-dawn crash. More than 250 applicants for Indian football team coach's job

The Indian football team's spirited showings in recent times seem to be having a ripple effect with the position of the men's coach attracting over 250 applications, an unprecedented number that also includes some well-know names from Europe. The post has been left vacant since Stephen Constantine resigned following the Indian team's failure to make the knockouts of the AFC Asian Cup after coming close to doing so. Contrary to speculations doing the rounds, All India Football Federation (AIFF) sources categorically denied that they are not exactly looking to recruit a high-profile name. In the recent past, AIFF general secretary Kushal Das had also said that they would appoint a coach based on the team's requirements and not get carried away by big names. The list of applicants also includes coaches from the Indian Super League and I-League. "The big names doing the rounds need not necessarily fulfil the criteria of the AIFF. Early next week the concerned committee will make a ...

Unfair to replace poor fielders with good ones, says Kaif

Delhi Capitals assistant coach Mohammad Kaif on Wednesday pointed out that IPL teams are replacing poor fielders with agile ones during games and hoped that the umpires will take notice of this unfair practice. "It is right that most matches are finishing close to midnight. Teams are bringing in good fielders and replacing them with slow ones. I think the umpires should look at the changes that the teams are making," Kaif told reporters ahead of Delhi's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Thursday. Kaif, who was among the best fielders in the Indian team in his playing days, said his IPL team will not hesitate to report the dubious practice of changing fielders in the middle of the game. "For example, DC versus KKR match, (Andrew) Russell went out, Rinku singh came to field. Piyush Chawla quickly bowled his four overs and went out and Rinku again came back. "We have seen that in the last Punjab game as well. Sarfaraz Khan didn't come to field after being hit ..
