Indian shooters clinch 1 gold, 2 silver on day 2 of Asian Airgun C'ships
Indian shooters Thursday clinched one gold and two silver on the second day of competitions to remain on top of the standings in the 12th Asian Airgun Championships in Taoyuan, Taipei. Ravi Kumar and Elavenil Valarivan won a silver in the senior 10m air rifle mixed team event while India made it a 1-2 in the corresponding junior event on yet another profitable day. Ravi and Elavenil topped the qualification rounds with a score of 837.1 but were beaten in the five-team final by the Korean pair of Park Sunmin and Shin Minki. Elite Indian athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, including weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, sprinter Hima Das and heptathlete Swapna Barman, Thursday took part in an 'Athlete Education Workshop' to learn about important off-field lessons here Thursday. The workshop, conducted by Sports Authority of India (SAI), touched upon some pertinent non-sporting issues that players have to deal with during the course of their career. The workshop was conducted keeping in mind that many of the Indian athletes are very young and need guidance on how to draw up endorsement contracts with corporate houses, how to conduct themselves in public forums and how to interact with international media after competitions, a SAI media release said. Experts from the fields of law, soft skills training, media and anti-doping spoke to athletes in a three-hour session, which was attended by 100 athletes and coaches. Former India centre forward Shivendra Singh is set to be appointed assistant coach of the national men's hockey team and will start working with the side next month. A livewire during his playing days, Shivendra will exclusively work with the strikers and form an integral part of the Indian coaching staff set to be headed by Australian Graham Reid.
