Expecting WV Raman to make a big difference: Mithali Raj

Her differences with ousted coach Ramesh Powar and CoA member Diana Edulji is a thing of past as Mithali Raj gears up to make a "fresh start" under the able guidance of new coach WV Raman in the upcoming tpur of New Zealand. The women's team was at the centre of a huge controversy after their semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup in the West Indies after Raj accused previous coach Powar of bias and CoA member Edulji of trying to finish her career. "I think it's a fresh start. Coming into the new year, this is the first series and yes we have moved on from that (controversy)," ODI skipper Mithali told reporters during the team's pre-departure press conference here on Sunday. Mithali is confident that Raman's experience as a coach would make a difference and she will be on the "same page" with the former India opener. AFC lauds Indian football team for its commendable show in Asian Cup

Asian Football Confederation General Secretary Dato Windsor John Sunday commended the Indian team for its impressive performance in the Asian Cup so far, saying that the country has made a "remarkable" progress in the game in recent years. India secured a stunning 4-1 win over Thailand before going down 0-2 to hosts United Arab Emirates in a group match in which Sunil Chhetri and Co. had more clear chances than their opponents. "India has performed commendably in the Asian Cup 2019 and the opening victory against Thailand, which was their first in 55 years in the competition's history, is testament to the development of Indian football and the continued dedication of the AIFF," Windsor said. Griezmann the saviour for Atletico again

Antoine Griezmann came to the rescue again as Atletico Madrid kept the pressure on Barcelona at the top of La Liga on Sunday by edging past Levante. Griezmann has now scored all of Atletico's last six goals and this latest one, from the penalty spot, proved the difference in a cagey contest at the Wanda Metropolitano. A 1-0 victory for Diego Simeone's side cuts the gap from five points to two behind Barca, who will restore their advantage with a win over Eibar later on Sunday. Levante, who have not won in the league since December 3, stay 11th. Atletico had 19 shots and, unusually for them, dominated possession but they continue to rely on Griezmann's excellent scoring run for points. "We all pull the cart in difficult moments," Griezmann said. "I cannot do anything without my team-mates." But, in their last five games, it is the Frenchman's goals that have earned wins over Levante, Real Valladolid and Espanyol, while sparing them defeats away to Sevilla and Girona. Griezmann was ...

Sound of silence as Qatar hit North Korea for six

Qatar's Almoez Ali scored four goals in a 6-0 Asian Cup rout of North Korea on Sunday in the eery atmosphere of a near-empty Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. Ali hit two in the first half and two more in the second to go top of the goalscorers' charts with five altogether, as the 2022 World Cup hosts safely reached the round of 16. However, there was little excitement at any of Qatar's goals as a long-running Gulf blockade of the resource-rich state prevented any fans from attending the game in Al Ain. The tiny attendance of roughly 300 in the 16,000-capacity venue was dominated by two small groups of North Korean fans who sporadically cheered and waved flags. In the unusual conditions, North Korea were guilty of ball-watching twice early on as Qatar went 2-0 up within 11 minutes thanks to Ali's sharp finishing. Ali had time to control Akram Afif's cross from the left and bury his shot on nine minutes, and he then clipped in Hasan Al-Haydos's ball from the right .

Rishabh Pant is a "champion cricketer in the making", who is very much in the mix for the 2019 India's World Cup campaign for his ability to seamlessly switch formats, says chairman of selector MSK Prasad. After being "rested" for the ODI series against Australia and New Zealand, there have been conjectures about his place in the England-bound squad but Prasad set the record straight about selection committee's plans about talents such as Pant and Shubman Gill. "Rishabh Pant played three T20s and four Test matches in Australia and that had an impact on his body. He needed complete rest for two weeks and then we will take a call on how many matches he will play against England Lions. Let me put it straight, he is very much in our World Cup plans. He is a champion player in the making and even he is not fully aware the kind of potential he has," Prasad told PTI in an exclusive interview. Want to play hard cricket and be respected off the field: Ashley Giles

England and Wales Cricket Board's managing director of cricket, Ashley Giles wants his side to play hard cricket on the field and be the 'most respected' among fans for their conduct off the field."We still want people to play cricket hard. We don't want bland cricket played out on the field. But as much as I want us to be the best team in the world, I also want us to be the most respected team in the world over how we go about things. That is going to be challenged. There are going to be things that pop up that would go against that, but it is part of my role to manage that," ICC quoted Giles, as saying on Sunday."The process in my role of consistently challenging and checking what we are doing and what the dressing room is doing is important. I can't do it on my own. I am not going to be in a tracksuit on the ground. We have some very good people in there I need to rely on and tap into. Again, how we play and how we are viewed outwardly is important, but also really important to me .
