Qatar's football World Cup 2022 will be a "carbon-neutral" tournament with zero harmful emissions, the country's environment minister told a sustainability conference on Wednesday. Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi said strict standards in design and construction would offset the tournament's carbon footprint, despite the huge number of infrastructure projects underway in the Gulf emirate. "The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy has been working on planning and organising a carbon-neutral 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament," Rumaihi said. Carbon neutrality is achieved by offsetting the amount of harmful carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere. Hydrocarbon-rich Qatar, which is spending $500 million a week on capital projects for the World Cup, is undergoing a huge transformation for football's biggest tournament. Among major projects, Doha is building or refurbishing eight stadiums, overseeing massive roadworks and the country's first Metro system. Qatar is also building the $45 ...

A single winning ticket has been identified in a massive USD 1.5 billion Mega Millions US lottery jackpot, the second largest on record, organisers said Wednesday. The winning ticket was bought in South Carolina, but the lucky winner has not yet been identified. Mega Millions, which initially announced a global record USD 1.6 billion jackpot, later revised the figure down to USD 1.537 billion. The new amount makes the prize the second largest, just shy of the USD 1.586 billion jackpot for a rival Powerball lottery in January 2016, which was shared between three winning tickets. Regardless, it's the largest single winning ticket ever and it dwarfed the previous Mega Millions record, set in March 2012 at USD 656 million. The six winning numbers drawn on Tuesday night were five, 28, 62, 65, 70 and another five as the special "gold Mega Ball." Defending champion Shiv Kapur will spearhead a strong Indian challenge at the USD 400,000 Panasonic Open India as the home golfers look to continue their domination at the 8th edition of the prestigious tournament starting here on Thursday. The highly-rated event held at the Delhi Golf Club since its inception has been won by six Indians in last seven editions. So the Indians, 69 in the 126-man field, will fancy their chances once again. No player has won the Panasonic Open India more than once since it was first held in 2011 and Kapur will hope to change that statistic when he leads an elite Indian field which includes three other past champions -- Digvijay Singh (2012), Chiragh Kumar (2015) and Mukesh Kumar (2016). "It was one of the best moments of my career," says Kapur, who keeps replaying in his mind the images of him holding the Trophy at his home club and his then two-month old daughter sitting on it. Chief hockey coach Harendra Singh lashed out at Indian strikers for missing half-a-dozen chances against Malaysia to settle for a goalless draw in an Asian Champions Trophy match, on Tuesday. "I am not happy at the way our strikers continue to miss scoring opportunities. The strikers need to work harder. Things will not come on a platter every time," Harendra said after the draw left both defending champions India and Asian Games silver medallists Malaysia on 10 points from four outings. India stayed on top of the standings on basis of a superior goal difference. Harendra said modern hockey requires quick decision-making by the players as rivals would always try to deny them time and space in the scoring zone. We have to do better inside the circle, said Harendra. He said Malaysia were expected to crowd their defence but it was up to the Indian players to create passage. Malaysia coach Roelant Oltmans, who was India's coach until last year, said the game proceeded as expected. "We did
Young Ritu Malik kept India in medal contention by reaching the bronze play-off but there was no end to the woes of Sakshi Malik, who suffered a humiliating quarterfinal defeat, and Ritu Phogat at the World Championship here on Wednesday. Ritu Malik, who had defeated celebrated Geeta Phogat in the trials, edged out Bulgaria's Sofiya Hristova Georgieva 9-8 in the repechage round despite lagging behind twice in an exciting bout. She trailed 0-3 after the first period but a four-point throw in the second period and a step out-point pushed her ahead 5-3. However, the confident Bulgarian reduced the deficit to one point soon. Ritu again found a four-point move to zoom to a 9-6 lead. Sofiya kept Ritu Malik under pressure but the Indian grappler just about managed to maintain her lead to progress to the medal round. Ritu Malik now has a task at hand as she is up against 2017 U-23 world champion and this year's World Cup gold medal winner Ayana Gempei from Japan. There was yet another ...

During their stay in the middle, the two were involved in a partnership of 139 runs in 142 balls for the third wicket at the Dr YSR ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, set amidst picturesque hills. Kohli pulled, cut, flicked and drove in the manner he does best before cutting loose towards ...

"We have written to the BCCI several times and their response has been very positive till now. However, actions should follow the response. We need positive actions from the custodians of cricket in India," Mahantesh told PTI. The Indian blind cricket team was formed in 1998 and is currently being managed by the CABI, an independent entity backed by the Samarthanam Trust, a non-profit organisation. Asked what CABI expects from the BCCI, Mahantesh said the body is in need of proper infrastructure and financial aid. "Major help that we are expecting from the BCCI is of infrastructure like grounds, regular funding and some cash prizes whenever our boys win the World Cup," he said. "The biggest problem that we face is of the grounds. We have to do with whichever ground is available which is difficult .

The Bombay High Court Wednesday dismissed a petition filed by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) against the BCCI's decision to shift the October 29 India-West Indies ODI from Wankhede Stadium to Brabourne Stadium in the city. A division bench headed by Justice B R Gavai said it does not want to interfere in this issue as several cases pertaining to the administration of the MCA are before the Supreme Court. The MCA can approach the apex court challenging the BCCI's decision, it said. The bench had last week refused to grant stay to the sale of tickets for the One Day International (ODI) match. The MCA and its two members -- Sanjay Naik and Ravi Savant -- said in the petition that the BCCI's decision to shift the match venue was illegal and arbitrary. While Wankhede Stadium is managed by the MCA, Brabourne stadium belongs to the Cricket Club of India. MCA counsel M M Vashi had contended that the BCCI decided to shift the match only because the MCA could not submit a 'hosting ...
A single winning ticket has been identified in the record-setting USD 1.6 billion Mega Millions lottery jackpot, lottery officials said Wednesday. A single ticket holder in South Carolina will claim that bounty, Mega Millions said on its website. The six winning numbers drawn on Tuesday night were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and 5 again as the special Mega Ball. The record jackpot had set off a lottery frenzy across America, with people lining up at convenience stores, supermarkets and liquor stores to buy a two dollar ticket that gave them a roughly one in 300 million chance of winning. The winner can take USD 913 million in a lump sum cash payment or the whole pile in annuities over 29 years. The jackpot got so big because no one had won since July, when a group of office workers in California shared USD 543 million. Until now the US record jackpot was USD 1.586 billion for a different lottery, called Powerball, in 2016. It was split three ways by ticket holders in California, Florida and ...
Ajinkya Rahane's struggles in limited overs cricket continued as India B comfortably beat India C by 30 runs to enter the Deodhar Trophy final on Wednesday. It was Hanuma Vihari's fighting half-century under pressure that propped India B to 231 for 9 in 50 overs. Their spinners, Krishnappa Gowtham (3/40 in 10 overs) and Manoj Tiwary (3/44 in 8 overs) did the bulk of the damage to restrict India C to 201 all out in 48.2 overs. However, what stuck out like a sore thumb was India C team captain Rahane's struggles as he managed only 32 off 61 balls. His struggles were compounded as left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem (0/29 in 10 overs) kept the Indian Test vice-captain under check. With three national selectors watching the proceedings, Rahane didn't help his cause a lot as he couldn't even rotate the strike. On a slowish Kotla track, Rahane played a lot of dot balls which increased pressure on the later batsmen. Finally, it was Gowtham who ended his miseries as Rahane could not check his ...
