In race for 5G, China leads South Korea, US: study

China is slightly ahead of South Korea and the United States in the race to develop fifth generation wireless networks, or 5G, a US study showed today. The study released by the CTIA, a US-based industry association of wireless carriers, suggested that the United States is lagging in the effort to deploy the superfast wireless systems that will be needed for self-driving cars, telemedicine and other technologies. The report prepared by the research firm Analysys Mason found that all major Chinese providers have committed to specific launch dates and the government has committed to allocate spectrum for the carriers. The 10-nation study said the US is in the "first tier" of countries in preparing deployment of 5G, along with China, South Korea and Japan. In the second tier are key European markets including France, Germany and Britain, with Singapore, Russia and Canada in the third tier. Industry officials say 5G deployment will reap important economic benefits for the leaders, and ...

Russia begins blocking messaging app Telegram

Russia's communications watchdog has begun enforcing a nationwide ban for the popular messaging app Telegram. The Federal Communications Agency said today that Russian providers have been instructed to begin blocking Telegram after a court last week sided with authorities that had demanded that the app be blocked in Russia until it hands over the keys to its data encryption. Telegram, which was developed by Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov, argues that Russia's FSB intelligence service is violating consumer rights, while authorities say the app has been used by violent extremists. Telegram was briefly unavailable to users early Monday afternoon but was back online later in the day. Durov said last week the latest version would have "built-in" features that would be able to circumvent the ban.

Facebook takes out ads to tout new EU data protection law

Facebook took out full-page ads in European newspapers today to trumpet tough new EU legislation that promises "more data protection for you", as the company seeks to win back trust following a damaging privacy scandal. The new law, set to come into effect on May 25, aims to give users more control over how their personal information is stored and used online, with big fines for firms that break the rules. "New EU legislation means more data protection for you," the Silicon Valley giant said in the blue-and-white ad, which appeared in German dailies, including Handelsblatt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the best-selling Bild. It also appeared in Belgian newspapers, as well as in France's Journal du dimanche (JDD) newspaper yesterday. Ahead of the introduction of the European Union's so-called General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Facebook said it would be asking users to check their privacy settings and tell the firm how "we may use your data". Background space hum may reveal hidden black holes

Scientists have developed a new technology that can listen to background humming of deep space and unveil thousands of hidden black hole collisions missed by gravitational-wave detectors. Deep space is not as silent as we have been led to believe. Every few minutes a pair of black holes smash into each other. These cataclysms release ripples in the fabric of spacetime known as gravitational waves. The gravitational waves from black hole mergers imprint a distinctive whooping sound in the data collected by gravitational-wave detectors. The new technique developed by researchers from Monash University in Australia is expected to reveal the presence of thousands of previously hidden black holes by teasing out their faint whoops from a sea of static. Last year, in one of the biggest astronomical discoveries of the 21st century, LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) and Virgo Collaboration researchers measured gravitational waves from a pair of merging neutron stars. The first ...

China develops 3D conic device to increase solar-thermal conversion

Chinese scientists have developed a new device of 3D hollow-cone structure that can greatly increase the solar-thermal conversion efficiency. The device, named 'Artificial Transpiration' by Zhu Jia and his team from the Nanjing University, is inspired by the transpiration process of trees, an article recently published online by the National Science Review, an English language journal affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said. It has a special 1D water path within it, which can reduce the energy loss in conduction, China's state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the article as saying. The cone structure, based on a graphene film, can collect more sunlight throughout the day when compared with a flat device, as about 10 per cent to 50 per cent of sunlight is diffusive. Thus it performs even better in the real world than in the laboratory, it said. As a result, the device can enhance the solar-thermal conversion rate to 85 per cent, which is much higher than the 40 per cent rate ..

The new application, developed by IIIT-D final year B.Tech student Palash Bansal would greatly facilitate the works of medical community, which has been constrained till date to view these images only in two dimensions on computer screens. Started as a research project, the new software application has now been packaged by Bansal as a business model. Explaining the outcome of his project, Bansal told PTI, "We have been able to take high-quality photos of the human body through MRI and CT scans for decades. These images enabled doctors to perform less invasive diagnostics on patients in less amount of time." "With development of computer science and technology, we are now able to even reconstruct three-dimensional models of the scans through complex algorithms and colour them. But, these systems have many
