Micro-blogging site Twitter has decided to audit app developers who use data from its platform, as business and research boosting tools to make sure it gets paid for the information delivered.
NASA has discovered a pulsar hurtling through space at nearly four million kilometres an hour -- so fast that it could travel the distance between Earth and the Moon in just six minutes. Pulsars are superdense, rapidly spinning neutron stars left behind when a massive star explodes. This one, dubbed PSR J0002+6216 (J0002 for short), sports a radio-emitting tail pointing directly toward the expanding debris of a recent supernova explosion, NASA said in a statement. "Thanks to its narrow dart-like tail and a fortuitous viewing angle, we can trace this pulsar straight back to its birthplace," said Frank Schinzel, a scientist at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in the US. "Further study of this object will help us better understand how these explosions are able to 'kick' neutron stars to such high speed," said Schinzel. Pulsar J0002 was discovered in 2017 by a citizen-science project called Einstein@Home, which uses time on the computers of volunteers to process Fermi ...
Global cybersecurity major Kaspersky Lab said on Wednesday that its automated technologies have detected a new exploited vulnerability in Microsoft Windows, which is believed to have been used in targeted attacks by at least two threat actors, including the recently-discovered SandCat.This is the fourth zero-day exploit to be discovered by the company's automatic exploit prevention technology.Zero-day vulnerabilities are previously unknown software bugs that can be exploited by attackers to breach a victim's device and network. The new exploit uses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows' graphic subsystem to achieve local privilege escalation. This provides the attacker with full control over a victim's computer. The malware sample examined by Kaspersky Lab researchers shows that the exploit targets OS versions Windows 8 to Windows 10."The discovery of a new Windows zero-day being actively exploited in the wild shows that such expensive and rare tools remain of great interest to threat ..

Scientists have designed a way to levitate and propel objects using only light, by creating nanoscale patterns on the objects' surfaces. Though still theoretical, the work is a step toward developing a spacecraft that could reach the nearest planet outside of our solar system in 20 years, powered and accelerated only by light. Decades ago, the development of so-called optical tweezers enabled scientists to move and manipulate tiny objects, like nanoparticles, using the radiative pressure from a sharply focused beam of laser light. This work formed the basis for the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics. However, optical tweezers are only able to manipulate very small objects and only at very short distances. "One can levitate a ping pong ball using a steady stream of air from a hair dryer. But it wouldn't work if the ping pong ball were too big, or if it were too far away from the hair dryer, and so on," said Ognjen Ilic, a postdoctoral scholar at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in

Facebook-owned Instagram on Tuesday made a move into potentially lucrative e-commerce by adding an option to buy products shown off in posts by selected brands. A new "checkout" button for instant purchasing launched in a beta version of the app in the US with a limited number of businesses, according to the popular image-centric messaging service. "We're introducing Checkout on Instagram," the Silicon Valley based division of Facebook said in an online post. "When you find a product you love, you can now buy it without leaving the app." Tapping the checkout button will allow shoppers to select options such as size or color and then pay for items without leaving the Instagram app. Previously, people inspired to buy products featured in Instagram posts had to follow links to outside online shopping sites. Information entered for an initial purchase will be stored for future use, according to Instagram. It remained to be seen how people would feel trusting information such as credit ...
A US congressional panel has said it was asking top executives from US tech firms to explain the proliferation online of the "horrific" video of deadly attacks in New Zealand that were streamed on Facebook and then reposted on other platforms. The House Committee on Homeland Security Tuesday asked for a briefing by the four tech executives, calling it "critically important" to filter the kind of violent images seen in the video. The panel asked for a briefing from Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Committee chair Bennie Thompson said it was troublesome to learn of the video going viral despite the commitment made by the industry's Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism. "Just last week -- nearly two years after you formed GIFTC -- a terrorist exploited your platforms to disseminate across the world a horrific video of mass violence," Thompson said in a letter released to media. "I must ...
Facebook says none of the 200 or so people who watched live video of the New Zealand mosque shooting flagged it to moderators, underlining the challenge tech companies face in policing violent or disturbing content in real time. The social media giant released new details about its response to the video in a blog post. It said the gunman's live 17-minute broadcast was viewed fewer than 200 times and the first user report didn't come in until 12 minutes after it ended. Fifty people were killed at two mosques in Christchurch. Facebook removed the video "within minutes'" of being notified by police, said Chris Sonderby, Facebook's deputy general counsel. "No users reported the video during the live broadcast," and it was watched about 4,000 times in total before being taken down, Sonderby said. "We continue to work around the clock to prevent this content from appearing on our site, using a combination of technology and people." Facebook has previously said that in the first 24 hours ...

Denmark's biggest telecom group TDC has chosen Swedish firm Ericsson over existing provider Huawei to roll out its ultra-fast 5G mobile network across the country, as a debate rages over security concerns surrounding the Chinese giant. The US and several other Western nations have shut Huawei out of tenders for the development of fifth-generation, or 5G, networks, because of the company's close ties to the Chinese government. "TDC has chosen Ericsson to build and deploy its 5G network," TDC CEO Allison Kirkby said in a statement released on Monday night. The statement did not mention Huawei, which has equipped TDC's network since 2014. "Over the past year, TDC has negotiated with several suppliers about the upcoming 5G rollout," the statement said. The decision comes as Germany launches an auction for the construction of its own 5G network after the US reportedly warned it could scale back the sharing of sensitive information with Berlin if it does not exclude hardware made by Huawei .

Ahead of the launch of Apple's streaming service, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has said his company will not integrate its services with the upcoming platform.
After facing flak for briefly banning one of India's most active Pages on Facebook that warned people about the dangers of fascism, the social media giant has restored the Page and apologised to its creator Dhruv Rathee.
Is your Tinder date trustworthy? Scientists are developing an online polygraph that could spot liars from the words they write on their internet dating profiles, Facebook messages or Twitter posts. It is tricky enough to identify a lie in face-to-face conversations that offer facial expressions, gestures and tone of voice because those physical cues add context. Spotting a liar gets even tougher in blind computer conversations, said Shuyuan Ho from Florida State University in the US who wants to shed those blinders. "The future of my research is an online polygraph that could be used many different ways," Ho said in a statement. "You could use it for online dating, Facebook, Twitter -- the applications are endless. I think the future is unlimited for an online polygraph system," she said. Ho envisions a future where technology can identify liars and truthtellers based on the words they write in electronic messages. Her research dove into the murky depths of internet deception where ...
