Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said that toll collection through RFID has resulted in gains of Rs 8,000 crore. Addressing the silver jubilee celebration of i-TEK RFID, a leading RFID and Wireless IoT solutions provider in Pune, he said this wireless technology has revolutionised the collection of road tax. Toll is collected electronically through FASTag, a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, on the national highways and some state highways. "The use of RFID in transport has become beneficial. There was a time when long queues used to be seen at toll plazas, but the RFID revolutionised the entire toll collection. The toll collection through RFID has resulted in gains of Rs 8,000 crore. Though there are some areas where toll theft still persists, with the expansion of this system, we are expecting additional gains of about Rs 10,000 crore," said Gadkari. Gadkari stated that toll collection has gone up significantly and is expected to increase further.
State-owned NHAI on Friday said it has strengthened the process for reporting 'loose FASTag' for blacklisting users to ensure smooth tolling operations. In view of upcoming initiatives like the annual pass system and multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling, it is critical to address this issue to ensure FASTag authenticity and system reliability, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said in a statement. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on Friday clarified that no decision has been taken on the nationwide implementation of satellite-based tolling from May 1. State-owned NHAI will track around 100 toll plazas with GIS-based software for seamless movement of traffic at national highways, an official statement said on Monday. According to the statement, these toll plazas have been identified based on congestion feedback received through 1,033 national highway helpline. The live monitoring and tracking system will provide congestion alerts and lane distribution recommendations when the queue of vehicles at a toll plaza is more than the prescribed limit, it added. The monitoring service will be extended to more toll plazas in a phased manner. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Monday said it has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to safeguard commuters and toll operators, reduce incidents of altercations and strengthen security at toll plazas. According to an official statement, the detailed SOPs include guidelines for NHAI field offices to ensure strict implementation and adherence by toll-collecting agencies to manage staff and road users. According to the SOPs, NHAI field offices will ensure that the toll collecting agency performs their duties following guidelines. IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd (IRB) on Monday said its revenue from toll collection grew by 18 per cent to Rs 1,183 crore in the first quarter of this financial year. Toll collection stood at Rs 1,000 crore in April-June quarter of preceding 2022-23, IRB said in a statement. "IRB and its private InvIT, namely IRB Infrastructure Trust, have registered a toll revenue growth of 16 per cent in the month of June 2023. Toll revenue growth for Q1FY24 for both entities was 18 per cent over the toll revenue in corresponding quarter of FY23," it said.
