Vatican's diplomacy sees setbacks, Ukraine heartbroken over Pope's comment

The Vatican's Russia-Ukraine diplomacy suffered two setbacks Thursday when the head of the Russian Orthodox Church cancelled a planned meeting with Pope Francis and Ukraine summoned the papal ambassador to complain about Francis' latest comments about the war. "The Ukrainian heart is torn apart by the pope's words," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters in Kyiv after the Vatican nuncio was summoned. "It was unfair." He was responding to Francis' comments about the weekend car bomb slaying in Moscow of Darya Dugina, a nationalist Russian TV commentator and daughter of the right-wing Russian political theorist, Alexander Dugin, who ardently supports the war. Francis listed the "poor girl" killed by a car bomb in Moscow, as well as orphans in Ukraine and Russia, among the "innocents" who have been victimized by the "insanity of war." Russia has accused Ukrainian intelligence in the bombing, which Ukraine denies. Francis has denounced the war in Ukraine but has tried

Moscow seeks 'sense of normal' amid ongoing conflict with Ukraine

At Moscow's sprawling Izmailovsky outdoor souvenir market, shoppers can find cups and T-shirts commemorating Russia's deployment of troops into Ukraine but from the 2014 annexation of the Crimean Peninsula. There's nothing about the special military operation that began six months ago. Throughout the capital, there are few overt sign that Russia is engaged in the worst fighting in Europe since World War II. Displays of the letter Z which initially spread as an icon of the fight, replicating the insignia painted on Russian military vehicles are hardly seen. There are only some scattered posters on bus shelters, showing the impassive face of one soldier or another and the words, Glory to the heroes of Russia. The posters give no clue as to what the man did, or where he did it. The public reticence, or denial, about the operation in Ukraine is striking in a country where military exploits are deeply woven into the social fabric. The annexation of Crimea produced almost instant memes

UN chief demands halt to "nuclear saber-rattling'' at Ukrainian nuke plant

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has demanded a halt to nuclear saber-rattling, saying the world is at a maximum moment of danger and all countries with nuclear weapons must make a commitment to no first-use. The UN chief on Monday told the Security Council that the commitment to dialogue and reason that led to the recent deal restarting grain and fertiliser shipments from Ukraine and Russia must be applied to the critical situation at Europe's largest nuclear power plant at Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine, where continued shelling and fighting in the area has raised fears of a nuclear catastrophe. Saying humanity's future is in our hands today, Guterres urged all countries to recommit to a world free of nuclear weapons and to spare no effort to come to the negotiating table to ease tensions and end the nuclear arms race, once and for all. The secretary-general spoke at a council meeting organised by China, which holds the presidency this month, on promoting common securit

Violation of int'l law: Macron assails Putin's 'brutal attack' on Ukraine

Hours after talking with Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday accused the Russian leader of launching a brutal attack on Ukraine in an imperialist, revanchist violation of international law. Macron, who tried tirelessly but unsuccessfully to prevent the invasion and long vaunted the importance of dialogue with Putin, has grown increasingly critical of the Russian president as the war bears on. He warned French citizens that the resulting energy and economic crisis confronting Europe isn't over, calling it the price of our freedom and our values. Since Vladimir Putin launched his brutal attack on Ukraine, war has returned to European soil, a few hours away from us," Macron said in a speech commemorating the 78th anniversary of the Allied landing in Nazi-occupied southern France during World War II. Macron said Putin is seeking to impose his imperialist will on Europe, conjuring phantoms of the spirit of revenge in a flagrant violation of the integrity of ...

US announces new military aid, drones for Ukraine to regain territory

The US for the first time Friday said it will give Ukraine Scan Eagle surveillance drones, mine-resistant vehicles, anti-armor rounds and howitzer weapons to help Ukrainian forces regain territory and mount a counteroffensive against Russian invaders. A senior defense official told reporters that a new $775 million aid package will include 15 Scan Eagles, 40 mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles known as MRAPs with mine-clearing rollers, and 2,000 anti-armor rounds that can help Ukraine troops move forward in the south and east, where Russian forces have placed mines. The official said the U.S. is looking to help shape and arm the Ukrainian force of the future as the war drags on. This latest aid comes as Russia's war on Ukraine is about to reach the six-month mark. It brings the total US military aid to Ukraine to about $10.6 billion since the beginning of the Biden administration. It is the 19th time the Pentagon has provided equipment from Defense Department stocks to Ukraine

Amid Ukraine-Russia tensions, US Treasury official to visit India

A top Treasury Department official is set next week to make his first official trip to India since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Amid tensions over India's neutral stance on the invasion that began in late February, the US wants the meetings to focus on how to deepen ties with the South Asian nation. Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo will travel to Mumbai and New Delhi for meetings that include Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office, the finance ministry, the Reserve Bank of India, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. And as India is set to lead the Group of Twenty intergovernmental forum in 2023, Treasury says Adeyemo will discuss key shared priorities such as bolstering energy security, addressing food insecurity globally, and combatting illicit financial flows. India hasn't shunned Russia despite its membership in the regional Quad alliance with the US, Australia and Japan, Instead, it has maintained its business ties with Russia, depending on the ...
