Nagpur violence: Court remands 17 accused to police custody till March 22

A local court here has remanded 17 persons arrested in connection with the Nagpur violence in police custody till March 22. The accused were produced on Thursday night before magistrate Maimuna Sultana during which the police sought their custody for seven days. The persons have been arrested in connection with an FIR registered by the Ganeshpeth police. The court in its order said the offences levelled against the accused were serious in nature and hence their custodial interrogation was required. It added that since a mob was involved in the violence, it would not be possible for the police to attribute specific roles to each and every accused at this stage. The probe in the case is at a preliminary stage and a thorough investigation is yet to be completed, the court said in its order. Italian govt okays draft law to tackle homicides, violence against women

The Italian government approved a draft law that for the first time introduces the legal definition of femicide in the country's criminal law and punishes it with life imprisonment. The move, announced on the eve of Women's International Day on Saturday, aims at tackling a shocking string of homicides and violence targeting women in Italy through strengthening measures against gender-based crimes like stalking and revenge porn. The proposal, agreed on late Friday, still needs to go through parliament and be approved by both chambers to become law. This is an extremely significant bill, which introduces the crime of femicide in our legal system as an autonomous crime, punishing it with life imprisonment, said conservative Premier Giorgia Meloni, who strongly backed the initiative. It introduces aggravating circumstances and increases sentences for crimes including personal mistreatment, stalking, sexual violence and revenge porn, she said in a statement. While the centre-left ...

Manipur in 2024: Chaos, ethnic violence, protests reigned supreme

It was a year of turmoil in Manipur. The divide between the Meitei community in the valley and the Kuki tribes in the hills deepened in 2024, triggering human casualties, widespread violence, mob attacks and drone strikes on civilian areas. Once known for its cultural harmony, the state now faces deepening divisions, with thousands displaced and communities living in constant fear, as tensions show no signs of easing and peace remained a far cry in the year gone by. The year started on a violent note when four villagers were gunned down by cadres of the banned Peoples' Liberation Army in Thoubal district on January 1. The incident, linked to disputes over money collected through illegal drug trade, forced the state government to impose prohibitory orders in all five valley districts. A month later, armed miscreants stormed the residence of additional SP Moirangthem Amit Singh at Wangkhei Tokpam in Imphal East district and vandalised his property. During the incident, the additional

A spike in deadly gang violence prompted the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago to implement a country-wide state of emergency Monday. The declaration followed a weekend marred by a spate of gang-related violence that resulted in multiple deaths, including five men believed to be victims of reprisal shootings. There is no doubt in my mind that we are dealing with an epidemic, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds told reporters at a press conference. Law enforcement will also have the ability to conduct searches, detain suspects for 48 hours and conduct arrests without a warrant. Schools, business and other activities, including upcoming New Year's celebrations are expected to proceed as scheduled. Acting Attorney General Stuart Young stressed that while there was general concern about the increased violence, there was particula
