Visakhapatnam Port signs Rs 300 cr deal for flyover to ease cargo traffic

The Visakhapatnam Port Authority signed a Rs 300 crore agreement with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) on Thursday to construct a flyover aimed at reducing congestion and enabling seamless cargo movement via road and rail traffic towards the port. Designed to improve traffic management and cargo evacuation, the project will cover the areas surrounding the port and critical parts of the city leading to it. "The agreement pertains to the construction of a flyover bridge connecting Seahorse Junction to the dock area at Vizag Port. The estimated cost of the project is approximately Rs 300 crore. The flyover will eliminate 11 level crossings that currently obstruct traffic flow, ensuring smooth cargo movement," stated an official press release from VPA. Spanning 3.3 km in length, the flyover will feature a carriageway width of seven meters for two lanes and 10.5 meters for three lanes, facilitating efficient entry and exit for port-bound traffic.

Andhra CM to visit pharma unit accident site, interact with those injured

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will meet those injured in the pharma unit fire accident in Visakhapatnam on Thursday and follow it up with a visit to the accident spot here. According to the official schedule, the Chief Minister will interact with the injured workers undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Venkojipalem in the port city around noon and also the medical teams. Later, Naidu will visit Escientia Advanced Sciences Pvt Ltd around 1.30 pm, the pharma company where the fire accident occurred on Wednesday, leading to the death of 17 persons and injuries to 33. Meanwhile, Anakapalli district Collector Vijaya Krishnan told PTI that there was no rise in the death toll which stood at 17. Vizag beats Mumbai port; emerges as India's top seafood exporting gateway

Visakhapatnam Port emerged as India's top seafood exporting gateway, clocking an impressive shipment of 3.14 lakh tonnes, valued at Rs 17,984 crore in fiscal 2023-24, a port official said on Monday. Mumbai-based Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), which handled over 2.4 lakh tonnes of seafood, valued at Rs 6,396 crore is ranked behind the Visakhapatnam port, followed by Cochin Port at the third position, logging over 1.81 lakh tonnes (Rs 6,120 crore). "Visakhapatnam Port has established itself as the premier port in India for marine product shipments, handling an impressive 3,14,199 tonnes of seafood valued at Rs 17,984 crore in FY24. The NHRC has issued a notice to the Andhra Pradesh government and the state's police chief over a college student committing suicide allegedly due to sexual harassment by a faculty member, officials said on Tuesday. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in a statement has observed that apparently, the "negligent and reckless attitude of the authorities" of the institution has led to this incident. The Andhra Pradesh Police arrested five people in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday in connection with the death by suicide of the 17-year-old girl, who made sexual harassment allegations against her college officials. Vizag Steel Plant restarts 'Blast Furnace-3' to raise hot metal production

The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), which is also known as Vizag Steel Plant, on Saturday restarted its Blast Furnace-3 (BF-3) to raise hot metal production by 2 million tonne per annum. The added capacity will also enable the steel plant to clock increased sales turnover of Rs 500 crore per month. "The RINL has shown the world how to produce the best quality steel in spite of raw material crunch. This day is a historic day in the history of RINL as we have lit up the BF-3," said its chairman and managing director, Atul Bhatt, in a press release. Named 'Annapurna', symbolising abundance and prosperity, Bhatt exuded confidence that BF-3 would bring prosperity to the steel plant located in the port city. He was accompanied by other officials. The lighting up of BF-3 is aimed at reviving the fortunes of Vizag Steel Plant and rejuvenating its operations. The BF-3 has been down since January 2022 due to raw material shortage, said a steel plant official to PTI.
