The government has agreed to raise stake in Vodafone Idea to 48.99 per cent with fresh acquisition of shares worth Rs 36,950 crore in lieu of outstanding spectrum auction dues, the company said in a regulatory filing on Sunday. The government is the single-largest shareholder in the debt-ridden Vodafone Idea with 22.6 per cent stake. "The Ministry of Communications... in line with the September 2021 Reforms and Support Package for Telecom Sector has decided to convert the outstanding spectrum auction dues, including deferred dues repayable after expiry of the moratorium period, into equity shares to be issued to the Government of India. The total amount to be converted into equity shares is Rs 36,950 crore," the filing said. Telecom major Vodafone Idea (Vi) on Tuesday said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the West Bengal State Export Promotion Society (WBSEPS) to accelerate digital transformation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the state. The move comes as the West Bengal government aims to strengthen its MSME ecosystem, which employs over one crore people. The collaboration will leverage the digital assessment and advisory initiative of the telecom company and it has already evaluated over 1.9 lakh MSMEs nationwide since its launch in 2022, the statement said. Telecom operator Vodafone Idea (VIL) on Friday said it has received a Rs 16.73 crore Goods and Services Tax (GST) demand order from Deputy Commissioner, Large Taxpayer Unit, West Bengal. The telco asserted it does not agree with the order and will take appropriate action for filing an appeal against the same. In a BSE filing on details of order received by the company under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, Vodafone Idea informed that order was received on February 27, 2025. The order was "passed under Section 73 of Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 read with West Bengal Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 confirming penalty of Rs 16,73,33,489 along with demand and interest as applicable." It pertains to "alleged excess availment of Input Tax credit, short payment of tax, etc," the VIL filing said. "The maximum financial impact is to the extent of tax demand, interest and penalty levied," VIL noted.
