Over 30.6 mn voters in Telangana after Special Summary Revision: Official

Telangana's total electorate stands over 3.06 crore as per the draft roll after the second Special Summary Revision (SSR) was released, a senior official said on Monday. Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vikas Raj said the draft roll for the second Special Summary Revision was published in all 119 Assembly Constituencies on August 21. As per the draft roll, the total number of voters in Telangana stood at 3,06,42,333 comprising 1,53,73,066 male voters, 1,52,51,797 female voters and 2,133 voters belonging to the third gender, an official release said. The state has 119 Assembly constituencies and there are 35,356 polling stations. The total number of general electors in the state is 3,06,26,996, the CEO said. There are 2,742 NRI voters and 15,337 service electors in the electoral roll. The number of young electors in the age group of 18-19 stood at 4,76,597, Raj said. Final phase of voting begins for local body polls in Uttar Pradesh

Voting for the final phase of urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh covering 38 districts, including Meerut, Ghaziabad, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, and Ayodhya began on Thursday morning. Voting will be held from 7 am to 6 pm on Thursday. The polls are considered significant as political parties are trying to showcase their strength before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Tripura recorded a voter turnout of 14 per cent till 9 am on Thursday, with the polling process largely being peaceful in the first two hours, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gitte Kirankumar Dinakarrao. India sees six-fold jump in voters since 1951; total electorate over 940 mn

India has witnessed a nearly six-fold increase in the total number of voters since 1951 to over 94.50 crore this year, but almost one-third of them stayed away from exercising their franchise in the last Lok Sabha polls. This has prompted the Election Commission to walk the extra mile to bring them to the polling booths. In 1951, when the voter lists for the first general elections were prepared, India had 17.32 crore registered electors and 45.67 per cent had turned up to exercise their franchise in the newly-born Republic. The number of registered electors witnessed a gradual increase over the years, and so did their participation in the subsequent elections. In the 1957 general elections, the number of registered electors was 19.37 crore and 47.74 per cent cast their ballots to send their representatives to the Lok Sabha.
