Anti-terror police have detained two Britons of Iraqi origin at an airport in southwest Turkey on charges of spreading terror propaganda for outlawed Kurdish militants, media reported today. Two brothers identified as Ayman Barzan and Hariam Barzan were held yesterday at Dalaman airport after they were interviewed by anti-terror risk analysis police over their "suspicious behaviours", the DHA private news agency reported. Police later checked their social media accounts where they allegedly disseminated propaganda in favour of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia, DHA said. Turkey considers the YPG as the Syrian branch of the PKK -- which has waged a bloody insurgency against the state since 1984 and is blacklisted as a terror group by Ankara and its Western allies. The two brothers, who were detained by police, were later placed by a local court in pre-trial detention, DHA said.

Israel's Supreme Court has temporarily blocked the demolition of a Palestinian Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank, a lawyer for residents said today, following growing international concerns over the move. The temporary injunction issued yesterday night stops the Israeli authorities razing Khan al-Ahmar until at least July 11 to give the state time to respond, attorney Shlomo Lecker told AFP. It follows a new petition by residents who submitted a planning application to rebuild the village at its present location. There has been strong international pressure on Israel to reverse its plans to raze Khan al-Ahmar, which the Israeli authorities say was built illegally. In May the Supreme Court rejected a final appeal against its demolition. Activists say the villagers had little alternative but to build without Israeli construction permits that are almost never issued to Palestinians in the parts of the West Bank where Israel has full control over civilian affairs. Prosecutors in Istanbul issued arrest warrants for 271 soldiers, 122 of whom are still on active duty, as part of a probe into followers of US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen in the Turkish armed forces, news agency Anadolu reported. Turkey has accused Gulen of ordering the attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 15, 2016 -- a charge he strongly denies. The raids were spread across 47 provinces, including the western province of Izmir, where prosecutors issued 75 warrants as part of an investigation into a Gulen "cell inside the armed forces", the agency added. Over 77,000 people including military personnel have been arrested over alleged Gulen links under the post-coup state of emergency imposed nearly two years ago. Ankara's Western allies including the European Union have .

The UN Security Council said today that "all parties" should work toward a political solution for Yemen, and repeated a call for the key port of Hodeida to remain open. The Tamil Nadu government today widened the scope of the commission of inquiry into the police firing in Tuticorin on May 22 during the anti-Sterlite protests by bringing subsequent violent incidents also under its purview. Violent incidents subsequent to the police firing on May 22 would come under the ambit of the Justice Aruna Jagadeesan led Commission of Inquiry, according to a government order issued yesterday. The Terms of Reference (ToR) of the inquiry, originally, was to probe the "causes and circumstances" leading to the opening of fire resulting in death and injuries to persons on May 22 at Tuticorin and damage to public and private properties. A human rights activist is killed every three days in Colombia despite the peace accord signed with FARC rebels, the country's ombudsman has said. Carlos Alfonso Negret said that between January 1, 2016 and June 30 this year "311 Colombian citizens who dedicated their lives to being social leaders and defenders of human rights" have been killed. The news comes as Colombia looks to end the final armed conflict in South America against the National Liberation Army (ELN), accused by local authorities of being behind a roadside bomb that injured eight soldiers, two seriously, in the country's lawless southwest yesterday. Since the 2016 peace deal with left-wing FARC guerillas, the Marxist ELN remains the last organized group fighting against the government, which has launched military operations in the dense jungle of its southwest to try to root out the rebels. The ombudsman said most of the murders were committed in areas beset by drug smuggling and illegal mining, but didn't identify ..
One of the world's main Holocaust memorials today slammed an agreement between Israel and Poland over a Polish law on the World War II genocide of Jews, saying it contains "deceptions". Poland amended the law last week after it sparked outrage in Israel by imposing jail terms of up to three years against anyone found guilty of ascribing Nazi crimes to the Polish nation or state. The amendment removed fines or criminal penalties from the legislation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki also issued a joint statement on the issue, which was later published in full in newspapers both in Israel and abroad. But Yad Vashem, Israel's renowned Holocaust memorial and research centre in Jerusalem, today released a scathing analysis of the amended law and joint statement. "A thorough review by Yad Vashem historians shows that the historical assertions, presented as unchallenged facts, in the joint statement contain grave errors and deceptions," .

Waves of air strikes pounded rebel-held areas of southern Syria today as pro-regime forces launched their most intensive bombing campaign yet in a two-week-old offensive. The renewed assault came after the failure yesterday of Russian-brokered talks to end the offensive in Daraa province, which has killed dozens and forced tens of thousands from their homes. An AFP correspondent on the edge of the rebel-held south of the city of Daraa, the divided provincial capital, said the bombing was the most intensive since the launch of the Russian-backed offensive on June 19. "From last night until now, Russian airplanes are pursuing a scorched earth policy," said Hussein Abazeed, spokesman for the joint rebel command for the south. "This is to force rebels to return to negotiations." Hundreds of missiles and crude barrel bombs were unleashed by Syrian and Russian aircraft overnight, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Samer Homssi, who had fled to the outskirts of Daraa with his wife
