Shirdi airport gets CISF cover

The CISF today took over security of the international airport in Maharashtra's temple town of Shirdi, which is frequented by lakhs of Sai Baba devotees every year. A contingent of over 180 armed personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), headed by a Deputy Commandant-rank officer, were inducted at the civil facility after a ceremonial event. Located in Ahmednagar district, at a distance of 238 km from state capital Mumbai, Shirdi is home to the famous shrine of Sai Baba and is one of the prominent pilgrimage centres in the country. The temple is about 12 km from the 1,300 acre airport that is located in Kakadi village. With this latest induction, the CISF now guards a total of 60 civil airports in the country. The Union Home Ministry had in January cleared the proposal to deploy the paramilitary force at the facility which was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on October 1 last year. Suspended Army officer moves SC, says getting death threats from insurgents

A suspended Army officer, who is facing a CBI probe for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets, today knocked the doors of the Supreme Court with a plea that he feared for life from insurgents in Manipur, where he claimed to have been framed in a false corruption case. Lieutenant Colonel Harpreet Singh, who was recently suspended, was posted at Manipur in the intelligence wing of Assam Rifles where he had carried out a series of operations against insurgents in which he claimed that over 100 ultras had surrendered and several of them were killed. A vacation bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Ashok Bhushan was today told by Singh's counsel that the officer had received death threats in April this year when he had gone to Imphal to attend court proceedings in a disproportionate assets (DA) case lodged against him by the CBI. Jharkhand encounter: Helicopter sent to rescue two injured security personnel

Additional Director General, Jharkhand Police, R.K. Mallick on Thursday said that a helicopter has been deployed to rescue the two security personnel who were critically injured in an encounter with naxals in Saraikela district."We have sent a helicopter to rescue 2 security personnel who are critically injured. Roadside bomb kills 2 police personnel in Pak

A roadside bomb today killed two police personnel and injured another in northwest Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near THE Afghan border, police said. The incident occurred in a remote area of Maidan District in the province. A police van was targeted in the blast killing a Station House Officer and a constable on the spot, the police said, adding that another constable who sustained injuries has been shifted to a nearby hospital. Security personnel rushed to the site and cordoned off the area. However, there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. For decades the city of Peshawar has faced the threat of militants, due to its status as a front line for the ongoing war on terrorISM as well as its proximity to the restless tribal areas and the porous Pak-Afghan border.

Afghanistan announces ceasefire with Taliban for Eid

Afghanistan announced today a week-long ceasefire with the Taliban for Eid, the holiday that caps off Ramadan, though operations against other groups including Islamic State will continue. The ceasefire will last "from the 27th of Ramadan until the fifth day of Eid-al-Fitr," President Ashraf Ghani tweeted from an official account, indicating it could run from June 12-19. It was not immediately clear if the Taliban had agreed to the ceasefire, which would be the first for Eid since the US invasion in 2001. Afghan security forces foil 12 Taliban Attacks

The Afghan security forces on Wednesday foiled 12 Taliban attacks in five districts of Ghazni province on Wednesday, provincial police chief Farid Mashal purported on Thursday.According to Afghan's TOLO News, Mashal said that the security forces thwarted the attacks carried out by the Taliban in districts Qarabagh, Gelan, Khawja Omari, Andar and Muqor.Nineteen Taliban militants were killed and six others were wounded in clashes with the security forces.Furthermore, one policeman was killed and two others were wounded, the report said.The Taliban has not commented on the report so far.The Taliban fighters have ratcheted up attacks across the war-torn country against Afghan security forces and government officials ever since they announced their offensive in April.Ghazni is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, located in the southeastern part of the country.

Shopkeeper shot at, injured by robbers in UP

A 27-year-old man was shot at and injured allegedly by two robbers when he was returning home from his shop in Shamli district, police said today. The incident took place last evening near Khandarawli village. The robbers also looted Rs 55,000 from the victim, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dev Ranjan Verma said. The two armed men intercepted his car and shot at him after looting the cash, the officer said. The injured shopkeeper has been hospitalised and a search launched to nab the robbers, the SP said.

A CoBRA commando of the CRPF and a policeman were killed during an encounter with Naxals in Jharkhand's Saraikela area today, officials said. The gunbattle began around 7 am in the Dalbhaga-Arki area of Saraikela-Kharsawan district when a joint team of the 209th Battalion of the CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) and the Jharkhand Police was out for an operation, they said. Commando Utpal Rabha (27), hailing from Meghalaya's North Garo Hills district, was killed during the encounter, while a state police personnel succumbed to injuries, they said. The encounter took place in Saraikela, the administrative headquarter of Saraikela- Kharsawan district, around 135 km from the state capital, the officials said. Heavy firing is still on and further details are awaited, they said.

Toll from Baghdad blasts rises to 16 dead, 35 wounded

Iraqi security officials say the toll from explosions that tore through a mosque in Baghdad has climbed to 16 dead and 35 wounded. The officials provided the updated toll today on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. A government statement said Wednesday's explosions occurred at a weapons depot in Sadr City. It says it is investigating. The neighborhood is named after the family of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, whose bloc won the most seats in last month's elections. Gunmen kill 4 praying at mosque in eastern Afghanistan

Officials say four people praying at a mosque have been shot to death in Afghanistan's eastern Khost province. Talib Mangal, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the attackers opened fire from a car Wednesday afternoon while more than 15 people were praying in the mosque. Provincial chief police spokesman Basir Beina said Thursday that three people were wounded, in addition to those killed. The attack took place in Khost's Mando Zayi district. Beina said police are still investigating and have not yet made arrests. More than one attacker was involved, but how many wasn't clear. The motive wasn't known, and Mangal said it was not clear if any officials were praying at the mosque. Both the Taliban and Islamic State group targeted government officials previously. No militant group claimed responsibility.
