Four Christians killed by gunmen in Pak

Four persons from the minority Christian community in Pakistan were killed today after gunmen opened fire on a rickshaw in south-western Balochistan province. The four Christians were travelling in a rickshaw on Shah Zaman road when they were attacked by gunmen on a motorbike in Quetta, police said. "All four died in the gun attack and the attackers fled after the crime," a police officer said. A minor girl was also injured in the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which appeared as targeted killing, police said. Christians make up around two per cent of Pakistan's mainly Muslim population of 180 million. They have been targeted in attacks and riots in recent years, often over allegations of blasphemy.

6 killed in violence during Dalit agitation in MP

Six people were killed and several others injured today in Madhya Pradesh, which was hit by widespread violence during the "Bharat bandh" called by Dalit outfits to protest against a recent Supreme Court order on the SC/ST Act, officials said. The deceased included four Dalits and two upper-caste Hindus, they added. Curfew was imposed in some areas of Gwalior city as well as in cities of Bhind and Morena districts in view of the violence witnessed during the bandh, organised to protest against the Supreme Court order of March 20, which diluted certain provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Internet services have been suspended in the entire Chambal and Gwalior regions, besides the Sagar region which also saw protests, the police said. The bandh supporters damaged a railway track, disrupting rail traffic in Morena, the main Station Master, B K Sharma, said. Use non-lethal means of force against civilian protestors: Raina

A Sikh organisation today urged the security agencies to use non-lethal means of force while dealing with civilian protestors. "Despite claims of the security forces agencies that they follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) while dealing with protesters, innocents continue to die in anti-militancy operations across Kashmir valley," All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said in a statement here. Referring to the encounters in south Kashmir yesterday, he said there were deaths of civilians protestors in Shopian. "Despite repeated promises, the security forces agencies continue to injure civilians with bullets and pellets. All this has to stop once for all since the killing of an unarmed person is against the humanity," Raina said. Raina demanded that bullets and pellets should be replaced by non-lethal means of force.

Dalit protests turn violent in Raj; 1 dead, several injured

One person was killed and many others injured in violent protests that erupted across Rajasthan today during a nationwide bandh against the alleged "dilution" of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Protesters, shouting 'Jai Bhim', blocked roads and rail routes, forcibly shut down shops, pelted stones, vandalised public property, torched several vehicles, and even attacked police in several parts of the state. Police officials said more than 150 people were detained across Rajasthan for alleged involvement in the violence. Afghan official says airstrike kills 30 Taliban fighters

An Afghan official says an airstrike on a Taliban training camp in northern Afghanistan killed more than 30 insurgents and wounded many more today, while the Taliban said the airstrike hit a religious school during a graduation ceremony, killing dozens of civilians. Protests across Gujarat over SC/ST Act verdict

Normal life was disrupted in various parts of Gujarat today as protests by Dalits against alleged dilution of the SC/ST Act turned violent and police resorted to teargas-shelling and lathicharge at some places, said officials. Bharat Bandh: Four killed as protest turn violent in MP

The Madhya Pradesh Police on Monday affirmed that at least four people have been killed in the state due to the ongoing nationwide shutdown called by several Dalit organisations to protest against the alleged dilution of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the Supreme Court.Violence and arson were witnessed in various states including Punjab, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan."Four people have died; we cannot confirm the number of people injured as yet.
