Pre-monsoon rains, thunderstorm begin in most parts of HP: MeT

Pre-monsoon thunderstorm and rains have commenced in most parts of Himachal Pradesh and conditions are favourable for the arrival of southwest monsoon in the state during the next few days, the Meteorological (MeT) department said. Light to moderate rainfall occurred over parts of Himachal Pradesh, including districts of Chamba, Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, Solan and Shimla, and widespread rains are expected in the state due to the onset of pre-monsoon, Director of local MeT office Manmohan Singh said. On June 26 and 27, 2018, rainfall will occur at most places over lower and mid hills and at few places over the high hills of the state from June 28 to 30. Very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places on June 29 and 30, especially in Mandi, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Hamirpur districts," he said. Southwest monsoon further advances into most parts of Bihar

The Southwest monsoon further advanced into most parts of Bihar today, triggering light to moderate rainfall at a few places in the state in the past 24 hours. "Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of north Arabian sea, Gujarat state... remaining parts of Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar during next 48 hours," an IMD report said. Dehri in Rohtas district recorded the day's highest maximum temperature at 42.0 degrees Celsius, followed by Patna at 35.0 degrees Celsius, Bhagalpur at 34.6 degrees Celsius, Purnea at 32.1 degrees Celsius, and Gaya at 29.4 degrees Celsius, it said. The Met office has forecast a generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunder tomorrow in four major cities of Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Purnea.

Light rains bring down mercury in Delhi

Overcast skies and very light rains in some parts of the national capital offered relief to Delhiites as the maximum temperature settled at 34.2 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 30.7 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal, said a Meteorological (MeT) department official. Areas under the Lodhi Road observatory received 0.5 mm rainfall till 8.30 AM after which "traces" of rainfall was recorded in the area till 5.30 PM. Humidity oscillated between 62 and 52 er cent. The Met office has forecast overcast skies along with the likelihood of few spells of rains and thundershowers for tomorrow. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 32 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 42.7 degrees Celsius, while the minimum had settled at 32.6 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures drop slightly after light rains in parts of Pb, Hry

The maximum temperatures today dropped slightly at most places in Punjab and Haryana after few parts of the two states were lashed by light to moderate rains. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, which received light rains, recorded a maximum of 38.2 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological (MeT) department report said. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a high of 37.7 degrees Celsius while Narnaul's maximum dropped by six notches against normal to settle at 34 degrees Celsius. Bhiwani registered a maximum of 35.4 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala recorded the maximum temperatures of 38.6 degrees Celsius and 37.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. Amritsar's maximum settled at 40.6 degrees Celsius. According to the MeT department, forecast valid over the next two days, rains or thunder showers are likely at many places in Haryana and Punjab.

Heavy rains, thunderstorm likely in parts of UP tomorrow

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh, while thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds may occur at some places in the western parts of the state tomorrow, the meteorological department said. The weatherman has forecast rain and thunderstorm at most places in the state on June 28 and June 29. Yesterday, the day temperatures were above normal in Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad and Meerut divisions. Allahabad was the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, the MeT department said.

Desperate search for 12 children trapped in Thailand cave

Desperate parents led a prayer ceremony outside a flooded cave in northern Thailand where 12 children have been trapped for days as Navy rescue divers packing food rations resumed their search today. Hundreds of people have been mobilised to find the young football team and their coach who went into the cave on Saturday and were trapped when heavy rains are believed to have flooded the cave's main entrance. Anxious relatives camped out at the cave near the border with Myanmar and Laos praying for the children's safe return. "My child, I'm here to get you now," one crying parent said, according to footage from local media. Another wailing mother screamed: "Come home my child!". Monsoon hits parts of Bihar, likely to reach Patna in 2-3 days

The Southwest Monsoon hit Supaul district of Bihar today, triggering light to moderate rainfall in eastern and north-eastern parts of the state. The rain-bearing winds are likely to advance towards the other parts of Bihar in the next 48 hours, the Met department said. No relief from hot weather, temperatures hover above normal in Hry & Pb

The maximum temperatures continued to hover above normal at most places in Punjab and Haryana, including in Chandigarh, with Hisar once again turning out to be the hottest place at 43.7 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, recorded a maximum of 39.8 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal, a MeT Department report said. Jammu reels under scorching heat, rain likely on Wednesday

The denizens of Jammu grappled with blistering heat today with the maximum and minimum temperatures settling several notches above normal. The city of temples recorded a high of 41.5 degrees Celsius and a low of 26.4 degrees Celsius, a spokesperson of the meteorological department said. The city's day temperature is 3.8 degrees above normal and the night temperature was 2.2 notches above the season's average, he said. The Met department spokesperson said rains, likely on Wednesday, will bring relief from the sizzling heat. "Scattered rain is likely to occur on Wednesday followed by fairly widespread rains till the month end," he said. Rain or thunderstorm accompanied by squall is very likely at isolated parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh over the next two days, the meteorological department said today. Some other parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh are very likely to experience heat wave conditions on Wednesday and Thursday, it said. Heavy rains lash south Gujarat; Valsad gets maximum showers

Heavy rains lashed several parts of south Gujarat, particularly Valsad, Surat and Navsari districts, in the last two days, causing water-logging and throwing normal life out of gear in the region. However, no loss of life or any major damage to property due to the downpour was reported from any part of the region, officials said. Umergam taluka in Valsad district received around 550 mm of rainfall during the last 30 hours, Collector C R Kharsan said, adding that the local administration was put on alert to deal with any eventuality. "Valsad district has been receiving heavy rain since the last two days. Umergam taluka received around 550 mm of rainfall in the last 30 hours. After a brief hiatus, south-west monsoon regained steam in Odisha today, triggering heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, in several parts of the state.
