Heavy rains hamper rescue for children stuck in Thai cave

Rescuers battled heavy rains today as they struggled to drain a flooded cave in Thailand where 12 children and their football coach have been trapped for days, as desperate relatives clung to hope the boys will be rescued soon. The young football team, aged between 11 an 16, have been stuck in the Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand since Saturday night after monsoon rains blocked the main entrance. Hundreds of rescuers worked overnight to install high-pressure water pumps to reduce flooding in the cave, but it was a losing battle as rains continued to pound the area in northern Chiang Rai province near the Laos and Myanmar borders. "Rising water levels is major obstacle in the rescue operation, and it rained hard last night," Khanchit Chomphudaeng, the provincial secretary in charge of the rescue operation, told AFP. Heavy rainfall occurs at isolated places in Rajasthan

Heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in the Udaipur and Kota divisions of Rajasthan today with light to moderate rainfall being recorded at a few places in the state in the last 24 hours, a Meteorological (MeT) Department official said. Parts of Dungarpur district recorded 15 to 19 cm rainfall, whereas various places across the state recorded rainfall ranging from 1 cm to 12 cm in the last 24 hours. Churu recorded nearly 2.1 cm rainfall, whereas traces were recorded in Ajmer, Pilani and Kota, he said. Sriganganagar was recorded the hottest with 44.8 degrees Celsius followed by 40.8 in Jaisalmer, 40.7 in Bikaner, 40.3 in Barmer, 40 in Churu, 35.5 in Pilani, 35.4 in Jodhpur, 34.7 in Kota, 34.6 in Jaipur, 33.8 in Ajmer and 30.6 degree Celsius in Dabok, respectively. The MeT department has forecast heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places in southeast Rajasthan and dust storm/thunderstorm with squally winds at isolated places in north Rajasthan in the next 24 hours.

Over 60 dead due to lightning strike in West Bengal since May

Over 60 people have lost their lives in lightning strike in different districts of West Bengal since May, a senior official of the state disaster management department said today. Dhirendra Roy (72) of Dahala gram panchayat in Khatra block became the latest casualty, when lightning struck him last night, he said. "Since May till June 25, we have reports of 66 people dying because of lightning in different West Bengal districts," the official told PTI. With the MeT office forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern districts of the state, the department has asked its officers posted in those areas to be on alert, he said. The PWD and the irrigation department have also been asked to be on guard. Pre-monsoon rains, thunderstorm begin in most parts of HP: MeT

Pre-monsoon thunderstorm and rains have commenced in most parts of Himachal Pradesh and conditions are favourable for the arrival of southwest monsoon in the state during the next few days, the Meteorological (MeT) department said. Light to moderate rainfall occurred over parts of Himachal Pradesh, including districts of Chamba, Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, Solan and Shimla, and widespread rains are expected in the state due to the onset of pre-monsoon, Director of local MeT office Manmohan Singh said. On June 26 and 27, 2018, rainfall will occur at most places over lower and mid hills and at few places over the high hills of the state from June 28 to 30. Very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places on June 29 and 30, especially in Mandi, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Hamirpur districts," he said. Southwest monsoon further advances into most parts of Bihar

The Southwest monsoon further advanced into most parts of Bihar today, triggering light to moderate rainfall at a few places in the state in the past 24 hours. "Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of north Arabian sea, Gujarat state... remaining parts of Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar during next 48 hours," an IMD report said. Dehri in Rohtas district recorded the day's highest maximum temperature at 42.0 degrees Celsius, followed by Patna at 35.0 degrees Celsius, Bhagalpur at 34.6 degrees Celsius, Purnea at 32.1 degrees Celsius, and Gaya at 29.4 degrees Celsius, it said. The Met office has forecast a generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunder tomorrow in four major cities of Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Purnea.

Light rains bring down mercury in Delhi

Overcast skies and very light rains in some parts of the national capital offered relief to Delhiites as the maximum temperature settled at 34.2 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 30.7 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal, said a Meteorological (MeT) department official. Areas under the Lodhi Road observatory received 0.5 mm rainfall till 8.30 AM after which "traces" of rainfall was recorded in the area till 5.30 PM. Humidity oscillated between 62 and 52 er cent. The Met office has forecast overcast skies along with the likelihood of few spells of rains and thundershowers for tomorrow. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 32 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 42.7 degrees Celsius, while the minimum had settled at 32.6 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures drop slightly after light rains in parts of Pb, Hry

The maximum temperatures today dropped slightly at most places in Punjab and Haryana after few parts of the two states were lashed by light to moderate rains. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, which received light rains, recorded a maximum of 38.2 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological (MeT) department report said. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a high of 37.7 degrees Celsius while Narnaul's maximum dropped by six notches against normal to settle at 34 degrees Celsius. Bhiwani registered a maximum of 35.4 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala recorded the maximum temperatures of 38.6 degrees Celsius and 37.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. Amritsar's maximum settled at 40.6 degrees Celsius. According to the MeT department, forecast valid over the next two days, rains or thunder showers are likely at many places in Haryana and Punjab.

Heavy rains, thunderstorm likely in parts of UP tomorrow

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh, while thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds may occur at some places in the western parts of the state tomorrow, the meteorological department said. The weatherman has forecast rain and thunderstorm at most places in the state on June 28 and June 29. Yesterday, the day temperatures were above normal in Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad and Meerut divisions. Allahabad was the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, the MeT department said.

Desperate search for 12 children trapped in Thailand cave

Desperate parents led a prayer ceremony outside a flooded cave in northern Thailand where 12 children have been trapped for days as Navy rescue divers packing food rations resumed their search today. Hundreds of people have been mobilised to find the young football team and their coach who went into the cave on Saturday and were trapped when heavy rains are believed to have flooded the cave's main entrance. Anxious relatives camped out at the cave near the border with Myanmar and Laos praying for the children's safe return. The Southwest Monsoon hit Supaul district of Bihar today, triggering light to moderate rainfall in eastern and north-eastern parts of the state. The maximum temperatures continued to hover above normal at most places in Punjab and Haryana, including in Chandigarh, with Hisar once again turning out to be the hottest place at 43.7 degrees Celsius. Jammu reels under scorching heat, rain likely on Wednesday

The denizens of Jammu grappled with blistering heat today with the maximum and minimum temperatures settling several notches above normal. The city of temples recorded a high of 41.5 degrees Celsius and a low of 26.4 degrees Celsius, a spokesperson of the meteorological department said. The city's day temperature is 3.8 degrees above normal and the night temperature was 2.2 notches above the season's average, he said.
