Cold wave continues in Raj but night temperatures rise

Cold weather conditions continue to prevail in Rajasthan even as most parts of the state witnessed slight increase in the night temperatures, MeT officials said Sunday. On Saturday night, Sikar's Fatehpur Shekhawati recorded 1.4 degrees Celsius. The town had recorded sub-zero temperature for the last nine days. According to the MeT department, the only hill station of the desert state, Mount Abu, recorded 1.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday night. The lowest night temperature was recorded in Alwar at 3.4 degrees Celsius. It was followed by Churu (4.7), Eranpura road (5.2), Sriganganagar (5.3), Chittorgarh and Udaipur (both 5.9), Sawai Madhopur (6.2), Pilani (6.6), Kota (6.9), Jodhpur (8), Jaisalmer (8.7), Ajmer (8.8), Sikar and Phalodi (both 9), Bikaner (9.4), Jaipur (10.1) and Barmer (10.5), the weatherman said. Odisha: 10 places record temperature below 10 degrees Celsius

Biting cold tightened its grip over Odisha Sunday with the temperature sliding below 10 degrees Celsius in at least 10 places. Keonjhar became the coldest place in the state recording a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees Celsius, while the mercury dipped to 7.5 degrees Celsius at the tourist destination of Daringbadi in Kandhamal district, the Meteorological Centre here said. Coastal areas of the state also recorded a sharp fall in the night temperature with state capital Bhubaneswar and neighbouring Cuttack recording 10.2 and 11.1 degrees Celsius respectively. The night temperature in most parts of the state is likely to remain 3 to 4 degrees Celsius below normal during the next three days in the state, the MeT centre said. Northern states shiver as mercury plummets

Cold wave sweeping Punjab and Haryana for the past ten days continued unabated, with Adampur shivering at 1.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in the two states recording a bone chilling minimum temperature. Severe cold swept Bathinda too, which recorded a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius while Halwara's minimum settled at 2.2 deg C, a Meteorological Department official said here. At 3.7 degrees C, Delhi records coldest December day in 12 years

The national capital on Sunday recorded its coldest December temperature in the past 12 years with mercury dipping to 3.7 degrees Celsius, as a moderate cover of fog surrounded the city dropping visibility. The minimum temperature for the month lower than Sunday's was recorded on December 29, 2007 at 3.9 degrees Celsius, according to data from the Met department. The Sunday's minimum temperature was four notches below the season's average, a Met department official said. The all-time lowest temperature in the national capital for the month of December was 1.1 degrees Celsius recorded on December 26, 1945, the data showed. The morning also witnessed a moderate cover of fog around the city with visibility dropping to 300 metres at Palam and 400 metres at Safdarjung, said the MeT department official. Cold wave in parts of western UP

Cold-wave conditions prevailed at isolated places over western Uttar Pradesh, with Muzaffarnagar recording 0.4 degrees Celsius. The met office said shallow-to-moderate fog occurred at isolated places over the state and there was dense fog in some parts of western UP. Night temperatures remained below normal in Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad, Lucknow, Bareilly, Meerut, Gorakhpur and Agra divisions. Muzaffarnagar was the coldest in the state with 0.4 degrees Celsius. Day temperatures fell in Moradabad division and there wad no large change in the remaining divisions over the state. Cold wave conditions tightened grip in Kashmir as the mercury went down at most places last night, with Leh, in the Ladakh region, experiencing the coldest night of the winter so far. Cold wave sweeps Pb, Hry; Karnal coldest at zero deg C

The mercury dipped to zero degrees Celsius in Karnal on Saturday as the cold wave sweeping most parts of Haryana and Punjab for over a week continued unabated. The minimum temperatures in the two states were several notches below the normal. Karnal in Haryana recorded a low of zero degrees Celsius, seven degrees below the normal and the lowest in the two states, a Meteorological Department official said. Among other places in Haryana, Hisar, Ambala and Narnaul shivered at 2.7, 4.6 and 2 degrees Celsius respectively, up to five degrees below the normal. Keylong coldest place in HP at minus 8.8 deg C

Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in Himachal Pradesh with a minimum temperature of minus 8.8 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological (MeT) Department said on Saturday. Cold wave conditions also gripped other parts of the state, causing the mercury to dip below the freezing point in Manali, Solan, Kalpa, Seobagh, Bhuntar and Sundernagar as well, the Met Centre Director Manmohan Singh said. The lowest temperature in the state was recorded in Keylong at minus 8.8 degrees Celsius between 5.30 pm on Friday and 8.30 am on Saturday, he said. Delhi feels the chill as temperature dips to 4 deg C again

Delhiites shivered on Saturday as the mercury once again dipped to 4 degrees Celsius. This is the second time in three days that the mercury has plunged to 4 degrees Celsius -- the lowest temperature in the last four years. The fall in temperature is due to cold wave conditions prevailing over northwest India, the Meteorological Department said. The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 4 degrees, four notches below the season's average, it said. The mercury had touched the 4-degree Celsius mark on Thursday as well. The humidity level at 8.30 AM on Saturday was recorded at 97 per cent. The weather office has forecast clear skies for the day ahead. "The maximum temperature is likely to hover at 21 degrees Celsius," it said. On Friday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 20.6 and 4.7 degrees Celsius respectively.
