Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday urged women entrepreneurs to use digital technology to help small businesses become resilient and champions of change. Addressing the 40th Annual Session of the FICCI Ladies Organisation, Thakur said financial inclusion and going digital was critical to achieving the economic empowerment of women. "Women must be a larger part of the economic development. Empowering women, addressing their concerns and amplifying their voices is a priority for the present government," Thakur said. He said India has the third largest start-up ecosystem in the world with 1.2 lakh start-ups and 110 Unicorns. "Women's contribution will be much more when India will move to become the 3rd largest economy in the next three years," he said. Vedanta Aluminium has said it is on course to achieve the goal of having 30 per cent women employees among its workforce by the end of next financial year, much ahead of the timeline of 2030 set by the company. The total headcount of Vedanta Aluminum is over 25,000 of which 22 per cent employees are women, according to the company's CEO John Slaven. "The company is on track to achieve a ratio of 30 per cent women employees on its rolls by the end of FY25. Notably, the milestone is set to arrive five years sooner than the company's stated target of 2030, with women professionals already comprising 22 per cent of the total number of employees," Slaven told PTI. BFSI, Telecom and e-commerce were the most sought after sectors by women jobseekers this year, with most looking for work from home opportunities, according to a report released on Wednesday. The report by revealed that the women seeking jobs showed a balanced approach between flexibility and career dedication, as 50 per cent (1.2 crore) of total job applications from women job seekers sought wfh opportunities, the report by apna.co said. Retirement fund body EPFO recorded a net new women subscribers addition of 28,69,688 in FY23 against 15,93,614 in 2019-20, showing a rise in employment through the pandemic, Parliament was informed on Thursday. The net addition in Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) subscriptions is an indicator of the extent of job creation/formalisation of the job market and the coverage of social security benefits to the organised/ semi-organised sector workforce, said Minister of State for Labour & Employment Rameshwar Teli in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. Teli explained that the EPFO data covers the low-paid workers in medium and large establishments of the formal sector. According to the reply, the net addition in women EPFO subscribers increased from 15,93,614 in 2019-20 to 28,69,688 in 2022-23. Air India will provide 26 weeks of maternity leave to women employees as well as daycare support under its revamped policies. Besides, the airline will give women pilots the choice to opt for quicker turnaround flights till the child reaches the age of one year. The option will be subject to request and availability, according to an internal communication. The revised policies, to be effective from April 1, are part of the carrier's 'MOMS - Returning Mothers Programme'. MOMS refers to 'Making Our Mothers Soar'. Women employees will get maternity leave for 26 weeks, including for commissioning and adopting mothers, as per the communication. Currently, the maternity leave is for 12 weeks. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has taken an initiative to distribute sanitary napkins to women sanitation workers every month, officials said on Thursday. The NDMC chairperson has approved the proposal of the public health and welfare departments to distribute sanitary napkins to them. These sanitary napkins will be distributed every month and the initiative will be continued for a year initially. "To mark International Women's Day, NDMC has decided to start distribution of sanitary napkins to women safai sewaks every month," the NDMC said in a statement. As many as 640 women sanitation workers in the NDMC area will benefit from this initiative, it said.
