Delhi receives mild showers, air quality dips to 'severe' category

New Delhi, Nov 03 (ANI): The air quality of national capital took a hit due to a combination of firecracker emissions, stubble burning and unfavourable meteorological conditions in past few weeks. Delhi has received mild showers on November 03. According to the Air Quality Index (AQI) data and System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), major pollutants in Delhi's Lodhi Road area were PM 2.5 at 500 and PM 10 at 500 both in 'severe' category. On November 01, the Supreme Court-mandated Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) declared public health emergency in Delhi due to rising air pollution levels. Higher value of AQI indicates greater level of air pollution and health concern. Residents have complained of a spike in respiratory problems, allergies and other health issues. India-Uzbekistan sign 3 MoUs in fields of Military Medicine and Education

Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Nov 2 (ANI): India and Uzbekistan signed three MoUs in the fields of Military Medicine and Military Education to further strengthen the Defence Cooperation between both the countries. Announcing the signing of MoUs on twitter, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said increased Military to Military cooperation will lead to enhanced interaction in the areas of Mutual Interest. Being physically active reduces death risk in older adults, reveals study

New Delhi, Nov 3 (ANI): Leading a physically active lifestyle is a must for older adults as it reduces deaths from heart disease, diabetes, chronic lung disease, and mental illness, says a study. A team of researchers looked more carefully at the relationship between death and physical exercise among older adults in Brazil where the number of older adults grew 40 per cent between 2002 and 2012.Their study was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. During the study, from January to August 2014, researchers conducted home interviews with 1,451 adults older than 60. Of these, 971 participants were given wrist monitors to measure their physical activity. Researchers also asked participants about their smoking habits and how they would rate their health. Devotees celebrate Chhath Puja with religious fervour

New Delhi/ Patna (Bihar)/ Gorakhpur, Lucknow (UP), Nov 02 (ANI): Devotees celebrated Chhath Puja with religious zeal in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur and Bihar's Patna. The 'Puja' is dedicated to the Sun god, the source of energy. It is a four day festival that is being celebrated this year from October 30 to November 3. On Chhath Puja, women perform the morning Puja by standing in a water body and offering water to the Sun and his sister Shashti Devi. Chhath Puja is largely celebrated in Indian states of Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. The festival begins with certain rituals and practices that involve 'Nahay Khay', followed by 'Lohanda and Kharna', 'Sandhya Argh' and 'Suryodaya'. The first sun ray is called Usha and last sun ray is called Pratyusha. The first and last sun rays are considered auspicious and worshipped during Chhath Puja.

Stubble burning continues in Haryana's Kaithal despite dip in 'air quality'

Kaithal (Haryana), Nov 02 (ANI): The stubble burning continued in Haryana's Kaithal district despite having massive level of air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR). Even after state government's ban, farmers burnt crops in Haryana. Issue of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana has become a major cause of air pollution not only for their states but also for Delhi-NCR region. While speaking to ANI, the Agriculture Deputy Director of Kaithal district, Pawan Kumar Sharma said, "133 farmers have been issued challans for stubble burning. This year there have been 60% less cases of stubble burning in Kaithal. FIR will also be registered against those farmers who do not pay fine." On November 01, the Supreme Court-mandated Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) declared public health emergency in Delhi due to rising air pollution levels. Earlier, farmers who were identified for burning stubbles had been sent legal notice to stop the practice.
