Sensex jumps 634 points as US-Iran tensions ease, auto and realty stocks gain

New Delhi, Jan 09 (ANI): Bulls regained control on the D-Street amid softening crude oil prices on Thursday following optimism in global markets after US President Donald Trump's comments on the Iran conflict eased worries and improved risk appetite. The BSE S-P Sensex closed 634 points or 1.55 per cent higher at 41,451 while the Nifty 50 moved up by 188 points at 12,214. Except for Nifty IT, all sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the green with Nifty realty ticking up by 2.73 per cent, auto by 2.68 per cent, PSU bank by 2.41 per cent and metal by 1.43 per cent. The cooling off of oil prices lifted market sentiments as India imports more than 85 per cent of its requirement. The international benchmark Brent crude futures fell by 4.1 per cent amid volatility in the previous session and traded around 65 dollars a barrel.

NGO seeks court permission to motivate Nirbhaya convicts for organ donation

New Delhi, Jan 09 (ANI): Lawyer Rishi Kapoor told ANI that he has filed an application in Delhi's Patiala House Court seeking permission to meet Nirbhaya case convicts to motivate them to donate their organs. While speaking to ANI, Kapoor said, "On behalf of NGO Raco, I have moved application in Delhi's Patiala House Court seeking permission to meet Nirbhaya case convicts to motivate them to donate their organs. On Dec 16, 2019, we made representation before jail authorities who asked us to take orders from court. The application is pending." Patiala House Court has issued death warrants against all four convicts in 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape case. The execution of convicts will be held on January 22 at 7 am.

Army Chief Naravane visits war memorial at Siachen base camp

Siachen (Ladakh), Jan 09 (ANI): Newly appointed Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane visited the war memorial at Siachen base camp on Jan 09. He paid tribute to all the soldiers who lost their life for the country. Army Chief Naravane also met soldiers in Siachen. It was the Naravane's first outstation trip after taking over the top job. Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh was also present. While speaking to media persons, he said, "I would like to convey my best wishes and greetings for New Year. It's always been my intention to come here on taking over but weather was not very good in 1st week of Jan. But I'm happy that this is my 1st visit as the Chief of Army Staff."

Delhi govt opened around 20, 000 new classrooms in last 5 years: CM Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 09 (ANI): Ahead of Delhi Assembly elections, while addressing a press conference in the national capital on January 09, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal spoke about Delhi schools. He said, "There are schools of Delhi Nagar Nigam and also of Delhi government in which Nagar Nigam runs primary schools while Delhi government runs secondary schools." "On one side, in last nine years 109 schools of Nagar Nigam have been shut between 2011-2019, while on the contrary in past five years Delhi government have established around 20, 000 new classrooms which is equal to the infrastructure of around 500 new schools," he added. "In last 9 years, 2,50,000 students have been reduced from schools of Nagar Nigam," CM Kejriwal further stated.

Delegation of foreign envoys meet J-K politicos in Srinagar

Srinagar (J-K), Jan 09 (ANI): A 15-member delegation of envoys from different countries arrived in Srinagar on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir on January 09. They will see firsthand the efforts being made by the government to restore normalcy in the region. They met political leaders from J-K including Ghulam Hasan Mir, Altaf Bukhari, Shoaib Iqbal Lone, Hilal Ahmed Shah, Noor Mohd Sheikh, Abdul Majid Padder, Abdul Rahim Rather and Rafi Ahmed Mir. They were also briefed by Chinar Corps Commander Lieutenant General Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon in Srinagar. The delegation, which includes diplomats from the United States, Maldives, Norway, Argentina, Niger, Togo, Vietnam, Bangladesh, South Korea, Peru, Morocco, among others, will meet civil society leaders and will be briefed on the security situation by the Army and intelligence services during the two-day visit.

Delhi Police organized passing out parade of DANIPS Officers

New Delhi, 09 January (ANI): Delhi police organized passing out parade of 09 Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service (DANIPS) Officers at PTC Jharoda Kalan, Delhi. The newly inducted trainees were given inputs of Police investigation. They have been sensitized on gender issues and crime against vulnerable sections of the society and in outdoors they were imparted training in driving, firing, handling of latest weapons and explosives, besides physical endurance. During their basic training, trainees were also given the knowledge of IPC, CrPC, Evidence Act, Computers, Cyber Crime, Traffic Rules and Human Rights. Commissioner of Delhi Police, Amulya Patnaik, reviewed the passing out parade. On this occasion, Commissioner of Delhi Police gave away the trophies to the winners and he also motivated them to enhance efficiency for effective policing in maintaining law and order.

Delegation of foreign envoys arrive in Srinagar for 2-day visit

This is the first visit by diplomats to JandK since the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution that accorded special status to the region. The delegation includes diplomats from the United States, Maldives, Norway, Argentina, Niger, Togo, Vietnam, Bangladesh, South Korea, Peru, Morocco, among others, will meet civil society leaders and will be briefed on the security situation by the Army and intelligence services during the two-day visit. In 2019, a delegation comprising members of the European Parliament had also visited the Valley after the abrogation of Article 370.

'Queen of Hills' looks breathtaking as covered with snow

In eight districts of the state, snow ranging between one to five feet had accumulated at different locations till yesterday. Shimla looked breathtaking in the cold weather. World Bank pegs India's growth at 5pc in FY20, projects recovery next year
