36 glacial lakes of Gilgit Baltistan declared dangerous due to CPEC project

Islamabad/Gilgit , Mar 04 (ANI): Thirty-six glacial lakes in various valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan have been declared dangerous. At least seven of them pose a major threat to the people, said a survey by an NGO named Focus Pakistan. Experts attending a seminar in Islamabad said Gilgit-Baltistan is highly vulnerable to climate change. The surge of the Khurdopin Glacier in Shimshal Valley, Hunza, and the formation of a lake, has emerged as a major cause of concern for geologists and local residents. Gilgit-Baltistan has been facing several environmental threats since the launch of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a multi-billion dollar infrastructure and development-related project. Cutting of jungles, mountains and increase in heavy vehicular movement in the region poses a serious threat to glaciers. Thousands participate in Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade

Sydney (Australia), Mar 04 (ANI): Scores of people turn out in Sydney to take part in the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. Thousands made their way down Oxford Street in Sydney to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Australia's first Mardi Gras happened 40 years ago protesting the country's discrimination of homosexuals. That march led to beatings and arrests. Decades on, the country has now changed legalizing same-sex marriage in December after a nationwide survey voted in favour of the move. The parade helped raise awareness on issues impacting the gay community. This year's march featured 200 floats and groups of street dancers.

Putin meets supporters ahead of presidential election

Moscow (Russia), Mar 04 (ANI): Thousands of supporters greeted Vladimir Putin at a concert rally. They were in support of his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election. Thousands of people gathered at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium on March 3. Putin paid a short visit to the pre-election rally dubbed 'For a strong Russia,' standing on a stage in the middle of the pitch and singing the national anthem surrounded by Russia's Olympics-winning hockey team and celebrities from TV stars to pop singers. Putin said on March 2 he would reverse the collapse of the Soviet Union if he had a chance to alter modern Russian history, news agencies reported, weeks before a March 18 election that polls show he should win comfortably.

Thousands march for slain Slovak journalist who probed corruption

Bratislava (Slovakia), Mar 03 (ANI): Thousands marched in Bratislava and other Slovak cities on March 2 for slain investigative journalist Jan Kuciak. The marchers demanded swift action in response to the killing. The murder has shocked the country and shaken its government. A banner read "An attack on journalists = an attack on all of us" and had pictures of the two victims. Most protesters walked in silence and many carried candles. Kuciak reported on tax and subsidy fraud and links between businessmen and local politicians. He had been looking into suspected mafia links among Italian businessmen in eastern Slovakia. Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova were found dead at their home before he could finish the article.

US retailer Dick's Sporting Goods curbs gun sales

New Delhi, Mar 01 (ANI): Dick's Sporting Goods says it will permanently stop selling assault-style rifles and high-capacity magazines and will also not sell any gun to people under age 21. UK duchess Kate meets midwife who helped deliver her baby

London (UK), Feb 28 (ANI): Kate, Britain's Duchess of Cambridge met the midwife who helped deliver her daughter when the heavily pregnant royal visited London's Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) on Tuesday (February 27) to become the charity's patron. Kate, 36, the wife of Queen Elizabeth's grandson Prince William, hugged Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent after spotting her during the trip to the RCOG. Midwife Dunkley-Bent was part of the team which delivered Kate's daughter Charlotte in 2015 at the private Lindo wing of St Mary's Hospital in London where son George was also born two years earlier. Thousands of Russians attend Nemtsov memorial marches

St Petersburg/Moscow, Feb 26 (ANI): Thousands marched through Moscow's central streets and those in St. Petersburg on Sunday to commemorate murdered Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov and voice criticism of authorities three weeks before a presidential election.
