North and South Korea talks result of my 'tough stance': Donald Trump

Camp David (U.S.) , Jan 08 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump on Sunday said that he was told that North Korea's willingness to hold official talks with South Korea was a result of his 'tough stance'. President Trump was addressing a news conference at Camp David. Earlier, North Korea agreed to hold talks with South Korea, the first in more than two years, hours after Washington and Seoul delayed a military exercise amid a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have exchanged insults ever since Trump took office, with Trump repeatedly calling Kim 'rocket man' for testing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. The talks between North Korea and South Korea are expected to cover the Winter Olympics, to be held in South Korea next month, and inter-Korean relations.

Angela Merkel begins new negotiations for fourth term

Germany, Jan 08 (ANI): Fate of the European Union's most powerful ruler is on the line, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel has entered yet another round of negotiations to form a government and keep her job. She's going into five days of talks between her conservatives, the Christian Democratic Union, and chief rivals, the Social Democrats, to renew their so-called 'grand coalition' in parliament. The last German election in September was indecisive as Merkel's party came out strongest of the multitude, but not enough to rule unchallenged. A rebellion has formed inside the Social Democrats' ranks calling for no coalition at all.

11 Saudi princes detained for protesting at royal palace

Saudi Arabia, Jan 07 (ANI): 11 Saudi princes were arrested during a rare protest at the royal palace in Riyadh, coming after last year's corruption crackdown that hit dozens of the country's elite. The princes had gone there to demand compensation for a death sentence given to a relative. They were also reportedly angry over austerity measures that stopped, among other things, their utility bills from being paid off by the state. They were detained after refusing to stop their demands. Last year, the Saudi government rounded up dozens of royals and government officials in what they billed as a crackdown on corruption, which further strengthened the powers Crown Prince Mohammed has gathered in recent years.

Germany, Turkey vow to end spat

Germany/Turkey, Jan 07 (ANI): Germany and Turkey's foreign ministers have agreed to pull out all the stops to improve ties that have soured due to disputes over Ankara's post-coup crackdown and the arrests of German citizens in Turkey. The chill between NATO allies Germany and Turkey appears to be thawing. Earlier, they turned on each other over multiple disputes including Ankara's post-coup crackdown, the migrant crisis, and the arrests of German citizens and journalists in Turkey. Now, signs of a return to normal were visible during an apparently warm meeting between the two countries' foreign ministers. While what exactly went down at this meeting hasn't been confirmed, but there have been a number of sticking points. The migrant crisis perhaps being most notable. Turkey is a gatekeeper for migrants attempting to enter central Europe. Berlin also upset Turkey by granting asylum to Turkish nationals accused of participating in the 2016 coup attempt, which saw thousands of arrests. Bo

Predator starfish posses threat to Great Barrier Reef

Townsville (Australia), Jan 06 (ANI): The return of coral-eating Crown of Thorns Starfish has made them a target of a search and destroy mission off Australia's Queensland coast. The Starfish have returned after decades to feast on the Great Barrier Reef, a world heritage and a major tourist attraction. The feasting process begins by the starfish spreading its stomach over the corals and using digestive enzymes to liquefy the coral tissue. To kill the invaders, the scientists suggest injecting them with bile salts. In the Swains Reef at the southern edge of the larger reef system which is under stress due to coral bleaching, a result of climate change according to the scientists, the outbreak took place. Production of extra nutrients in the water has compelled the invasion by the starfish but the scientists are still unknown of the reason behind their return.
