Jakarta rally against U.S. President Trump's Jerusalem plan

Jakarta (Indonesia), Dec 10 (ANI): Thousands of members and supporters of an Indonesian political party rallied against United States President Donald Trump's plan to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital on Sunday in Indonesia's Jakarta. Calling it a violation of human rights beyond the limits of religion, members of the Prosperous Justice Party held banners against Trump's Jerusalem statement. The party's chairman Sohibul Iman urged Indonesian President Joko Widodo to lead OIC member countries in pressuring Trump to reverse his decision. The status of Jerusalem home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions is one of the biggest obstacles to reaching a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Iraq formally declares final victory over Islamic State

Iraq, Dec 10 (ANI): Iraq has formally declared that its fight against Islamic State is over after three years of heavy combat. The Prime Minister of Iraq Haider Al-Abadi said troops had purged the remaining members of the militant group, three years after they captured around a third of Iraq's territory. He added that forces had recaptured the last areas still under I.S. control along the border with Syria. The group's de facto capital in Iraq, Mosul fell in July after a gruelling nine-month campaign backed by a U.S.-led coalition. And then Iraqi forces captured the last remaining town under Islamic State control, Rawa near that border last month. In September, Islamic State's Syrian capital Raqqa fell to a U.S.-backed Kurdish-led coalition. The forces fighting Islamic State in both countries say they now expect a new phase of guerrilla warfare, typical to the group.

Burkina Faso's cotton sector settles dispute with U.S. seed maker Monsanto

Burkina Faso, Dec 09 (ANI): Burkina Faso's cotton sector finally settled a dispute with U.S. seed maker Monsanto over what it said were revenue losses caused by the introduction of genetically modified cotton. For the cotton farmers of Burkina Faso, genetically modified crops are for now a thing of the past. This season, Africa's top cotton producing country returned to conventional crops after an eight-year GM partnership with U.S. agro-chemical giant Monsanto failed. Since 2008, after seeing their crops ravaged by the bollworm, cotton growers in Burkina Faso began using a pest-resistant cotton strain, first introduced in the U.S. In December 2016 the Burkina-Monsanto partnership ended with Monsanto writing off Burkina's more than 19 million dollar debt.
