New York, Apr 22 (ANI): Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal on Friday said coal will continue to play a major role in fulfilling India's energy needs. He said India's focus was on accomplishing its targets. Goyal's remarks came at a press conference in New York, the U.S., on the eve of 200 countries signing the agreement adopted at the Global Climate Summit in Paris last year. Submitting its plans ahead of the Paris Climate Summit in December 2015, India had promised to shave a third "off the rate" at which it emits greenhouse gases over the next 15 years.

Nepal, Apr 22 (ANI): Nepal risks more turmoil as the Madhes Youth Front plans to intensify protest against government if it fails to address the demands for greater representation of minority ethnic Madhesis in the new constitution. A 10-day-long peaceful protest is likely to begin very soon in 22 districts of Madhes region. Many Madhesis want their region, which is home to half of the country's 28 million people, to become an autonomous state within Nepal and not be broken up into parts of six of the seven federal provinces as envisaged in the new constitution. Several small Madhesi groups have given a deadline of April 12 to address their demands, failing which fresh action would be taken. The five-month border blockade that began last year caused severe fuel shortages.

Nepal, Apr 21 (ANI): One year after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, the country's tourism industry is recovering slowly and centuries old buildings are still under renovation. An earthquake that hit Nepal on April 25, 2015, killed thousands and demolished more than half-a-million homes, most of them in rural areas cut off from emergency medical care. On May 12, another massive quake struck Kathmandu. The two tremors killed 9,000 people, injured more than 22,000 and damaged or destroyed more than 900,000 houses, forcing many to brave freezing temperatures living in temporary shelters made from tarps and corrugated iron sheets. Anger and frustration has been mounting in Nepal in the months following the disasters, as many Nepalis awaited assistance. Ecuador, Apr 20 (ANI): Aerial images showed the scope of the wide destruction in coastal Ecuador after earthquake killed nearly 500 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The death toll from the 7.8 magnitude quake stood at 480 on Tuesday afternoon but was expected to rise. According to the latest government tallies, 107 people are missing and more than 4,000 were injured.

Muzaffarabad (POK) Apr 19: A massive protest rally erupted in Muzaffarabad against the oppressive rule of the Pakistani authorities in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Instead of listening to their concerns, the police resorted to baton charge on the peaceful demonstrators and took them into custody. Activists claim the benefits of economic development are not passed over to local youths. Kabul, Apr 19 (ANI): A heavy explosion rocked central Kabul city with preliminary reports suggesting the blast has taken place in the second police district of the city on Tuesday morning. Ecuador, Apr 18 (ANI): The death toll in a devastating earthquake that jolted Ecuador has risen to 246 with 2,527 being injured. Ecuador, which has declared a state of emergency in six provinces, has mobilised around 14,000 army and public security personnel to the affected areas. Ecuador's largest city Guayaquil saw a number of casualties and infrastructure damage. The city also secured eight municipal shelters as safe zones for people to stay in.

Guayaquil, Ecuador, Apr 17 (ANI): A 7.8 magnitude earthquake collapsed a heavily transited bridge in Guayaquil on Saturday killing one. Police and rescue personnel swarmed around the fallen bridge, which destroyed a car. Authorities said that one occupant had been killed but the other occupant survived and had been taken to a local hospital. At least 41 people died in Ecuador due to the quake. The Andean nation's government recommended residents leave coastal areas over concern for rising tides following the quake. The country's Geophysics Institute in a bulletin described "considerable damage" in the area of the epicenter and in Guayaquil, without providing further details.
London, Apr 16 (ANI): Protests were staged against Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in London in the wake of their names figuring in the controversial Panama Papers leak. The protesters, including representatives of the Imran Khan led Pakistan Tehreek e Insafs (PTI) held up posters and banners that called on Prime Minister Sharif to resign. The demonstrations come in the wake of the Panama Papers mentioning the names of Sharifs two sons, Hassan and Hussain, and his daughter Maryam Nawaz and them maintaining allegedly illegal offshore accounts and businesses.
Kumamoto, Apr 16 (ANI): Another massive earthquake hit Japan's Kumamoto city early on Saturday morning. The earthquake measured 7.3 on the open-ended Richter Scale. The death toll from the natural calamity is currently being pegged at between 15 to 20, while the injury toll is said to several hundreds. The city was hit by an earthquake first on Thursday.
Lahore (Pakistan), Apr 14 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria on Thursday rubbished the allegations of suspicion in the death of Indian prisoner Kripal Singh, saying he died of heart attack. Zakaria stressed that it was not appropriate to see everything through the prism of suspicion and conspiracy. Muzaffarabad (PoK), Apr 14 (ANI): Anti-Pakistan protests have erupted in various parts of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) over Islamabad's discrimination in employment to local youth. It is reported that jobs, which are rare in the area, are being handed to Pakistani Youth and the Kashmiri Youth are being marginalised. The demonstrators raised anti-Pakistan slogans, resulting in crack-down on the rally by the local police. The protestors carried placards which read "Kashmir Bachanay Nikley Hain, Aao Hamaray Saath Chalo". Police resorted to heavy baton charge on the demonstrators and took many of them into custody.
