Nepal, Feb 02 (ANI): The ongoing Madhesi agitation has crippled normal life in the Nepal's Terai region. Recently, Madhesi leaders in Birgunj conducted a meeting in order to resolve the ongoing crisis in their country by putting more effort in convincing the government to address their demands. Economic situation has worsened since the agitation started six months ago. Protesters have blocked trucks coming in from neighbouring India, leading to acute shortage of fuel and medicine. Around 60 people have been killed in police firing as protestors demand equal rights in the constitution that was adopted last September. Nepal, Jan 27 (ANI): Even after months of agitation and protests, there seems to be no concrete solution to the Madhesi unrest. Due to prolonged agitation, people in Terai and Madhesh region have been facing inconvenience and a fuel crisis. Keeping this in mind, United Madhesi Front initiated the move to open the market areas in the Birgunj area for the convenience of the people. Ethnic Madhesi leaders on Saturday, January 23, rejected the first amendment of Nepal's constitution which was voted upon by the Himalayan nation's parliament after months of protest by their community. The agitating Madhesi community is demanding demarcation of provinces, fixing of electoral constituencies on the basis of population and proportional representation, and the protests - that still continue to be hold since the new constitution was adopted in September - have claimed at least 55 lives so far.

Nepal, Jan 23 (ANI): A day after three persons were killed in police firing in Rangeli Bazaar, enraged activists took to the streets, burning tyres and obstructing vehicular movement along the Biratnagar-Rangeli road. The incident took place on January 21 in Rangeli, 215 km southeast of Kathmandu, when police fired at ethnic Madhesi activists to stop them from disrupting a gathering. Eight others were also injured in the firing. Amid the deepening political crisis in Nepal, US has asked Nepal Prime Minister K. P. Oli to take concrete steps to resolve the political impasse. The United Madhesi Front, which is leading the protests, wants state boundaries to be redrawn to give their communities more power. So far, more than 50 people have died in the agitation and the talks between the protesting Madhesi groups and the government have not yielded any results.

Raising slogans against the government, the protestors demanded an immediate action plan to address their issues. Around 1,000 protesters took out a procession rally, some on motorbikes and bicycles, while others marched to the Birgunj-Raxual border. Since the adoption of the new constitution last year, Nepal has been witnessing widespread protests by the people of the Southern Terai region. Inconclusive talks between the government and the Madheshi leaders who are demanding adequate representation in policy making and redrawing of boundaries of new districts have led to frequent clashes between people of the Terai region and security forces.

Nepal, Jan 21 (ANI): Madhesh Loktantrik Morcha organised an event to honour the Madeshi martyrs, and commemorate the 9th anniversary of those who laid down their lives fighting for their rights in the Himalayan nation in 2007. The Madeshi movement started in 2007 as the people of the region felt they have been marginalised from their basic rights and discriminatory and domineering tendencies of the hill elites overpowered Madheshi elites. During the Madeshi movement, around 53 people protesting for equal rights in the constitution were killed in 2007. The Terai incorporates 20 of Nepal's 75 districts and accounts 17 % of the total area of Nepal. Madeshis have been protesting since Nepal adopted new constitution last year in September. According to a rescued student, around 60 to 70 students had been shot in the head by the attackers. Two terrorists have also been killed. The militants entered the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, early on Wednesday before opening fire on students and teachers in classrooms and hostels, two police officials said. Deputy Inspector General Saeed Wazir said the army and police had moved into the university and a gunfight with the attackers was under way. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Birgunj, Jan 19 -(ANI): The members of Madhesh Andolankari Samiti, a newly formed group, staged a protest in Birgunj to support the Madhesi agitation, warning the government to deliver justice to Madhesi people in the country. They said they will overlook the ongoing talks between Madhesi parties and Nepal government. The New Nepali Constitution was promulgated on September 20 last year. The Madhesi parties are protesting since then to raise demand for the formation of two provinces in the Nepali Terai. The Madhesis also seek proportional representation in government jobs and restoration of rights granted to them in the interim constitution of 2007. Over 55 people, including agitators and police personnel, have been killed in the past five months of the agitation.
