Gunman kills two people and himself, injures seven in Louisiana theatre shooting

Louisiana, July 24 (ANI): A lone gunman opened fire inside a crowded movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, killing two people and injuring seven others before taking his own life, police said. The gunfire erupted during a 7 pm CDT showing of the film "Trainwreck" and took place almost three years to the day after a massacre at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, that killed 12 people. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said two people died in the hail of bullets before the 58-year-old suspect killed himself with a handgun as officers rushed to the scene shortly after 7:30 pm. Seven people suffered injuries ranging from non life-threatening to critical, Craft said. Authorities said they knew the gunman's identity but were not releasing his name during the early stage of the investigation. Police officials said that bomb-sniffing dogs had alerted on a backpack inside the theater and that they had also signaled "suspicious" items inside the suspect's car. 502 kilometers of China Pakistan Economic Corridor's western route completed in record time

Balochistan/ Pakistan, July 24 (ANI): The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has completed 502 kilometers of the 870 kilometers road connecting Pakistan's deep sea Gwadar port with the western alignment of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Pakistan army said. FWO is an administrative branch of the Pakistan Army that includes active duty officers and civilian scientists and engineers which has been involved with the construction of bridges, roads, tunnels, airfields and dams in Pakistan. The daunting task of constructing the 870 kilometers road is very risky in terms of security and was assigned to FWO by Pakistan's army chief General Raheel Sharif. "The FWO took up the challenge to extend the benefits of Gwadar port to rest of the country by building roads in rugged mountainous terrain and highly inaccessible areas. Pakistan PM addresses nation over inquiry commission report on 2013 election rigging

Islamabad, July 24 (ANI): Pakistan's three- member judicial commission headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk, in much- awaited detailed report sent to the Ministry of Law rejected all the three allegations of cricketer- turned- politician Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek- e- Insaf (PTI) party on rigging in the 2013 general elections. Finally, UN ship loaded with food aid reaches Yemen's Aden port amid fighting

Aden Port, July 23 (ANI): A United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) ship carrying food arrived in the Yemeni port of Aden. It was the first WFP-chartered ship to berth at the port since conflict erupted in Yemen in March. The ship had been anchored off Aden since June 26 but had to wait for a safe opportunity to berth, the World Food Programme said. The ship carried enough UN food aid to feed 180,000 people for a month. More WFP-chartered ships are on stand-by near Aden carrying fuel and more food. The UN body is working to channel food through Aden to people in need of humanitarian assistance, particularly in Yemen's southern governorates, which are largely inaccessible because of fighting. About 13 million people - more than half the population - are thought to be in dire need of food in the country.

Islamic State claims suicide car bomb that kills more than 100 in Iraq

Khan Bani Saad, July 18 (ANI): Islamic State militants claimed an attack in which more than 100 people were killed in a suicide car bombing in the busy market town of Khan Bani Saad in Iraq on Friday. Residents continued to search for victims of the blast on Saturday as wreckage was cleared from the road. The blast brought down several buildings in Khan Bani Saad, about 30 km (20 miles) northeast of Baghdad, crushing to death people who were celebrating the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, reports suggest. Debris and rubble from the blast was strewn across the road on Saturday, and burnt out cars were towed from the scene. Islamic State, which controls large parts of northern and western Iraq, claimed responsibility for the attack in the mixed eastern province of Diyala where Khan Bani Saad is located and said the target was "rejectionists", as the group refers to Shi'ite Muslims.

Pak army chief hosts 'iftar' for families of students killed in Peshawar school attack last year

Peshawar, July 17 (ANI): An Iftar dinner was held at the Corp Headquarters Peshawar in honour of the families of students killed during a Taliban attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar last year. Pakistan's army chief General Raheel Sharif and his wife had specially travelled to Peshawar to be with the families of the victims at the iftar dinner. More than 140 people, including 134 children, were killed in the massacre on December 16 in one of the worst assaults in Pakistan's recent history. "Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif, visited Corps Headquarters Peshawar, where he hosted an iftar dinner to honour the families of the shuhada (martyrs) of Army Public School Peshawar. Begum Raheel Sharif also accompanied COAS. General Raheel Sharif met each family and separately expressed his profound grief and solidarity with the bereaved families," a statement from the army's media wing ISPR said.

Japan provides solution for cities facing flood linked problems during monsoon

Tokyo, July 16 (ANI): Major cities in the world are facing flood related problems during the rainy reason. In Asia, the situation is grim, especially in developing countries like India. Japan's capital Tokyo, which witnesses an average rainfall of 1700 mm annually, has overcome this problem by developing underground regulating reservoirs and diversion channels. Women cops investigating Asaram rape case receive threat letters, Asaram's spokesperson alleges conspiracy

New Delhi, July 16 (ANI): Two women police officers who had been investigating the rape case against self styled godman Asaram received threat letters. In the letter the sender had threatened woman police inspector Divya Raviya and ACP of women police station, Kanan Desai with dire consequences. Security has been provided to the two officers and armed personnel have been deployed to ensure round the clock cover for the two officers. Meanwhile, the kin of Kripal Singh, the third witness to die in the sexual assault case against self styled godman Asaram Bapu, have reportedly requested for permission to keep a licensed gun for their safety. Pakistani wheelchair cricketers play tournament in Karachi, eye India tour

Karachi, July 15 (ANI): Wheelchair cricket teams arrived in Pakistani port city of Karachi from across the country to play a tournament where they would be selected as a squad to represent the country in India, organizers said. Pakistan's wheelchair cricket team beat the host Nepal in all three T-20 matches and won the International Wheelchair Cricket Winter Cup series in February. Called "2nd Super Six Wheelchair Cricket Tournament 2015", the tournament aims to give an opportunity for young talent and the chance to represent the country in upcoming international cricket competitions. International Wheelchair Cricket Association (IWCA), which organized the tournament, said they eyed tour to India in August and the possible venues for three T-twenty matches will be Delhi and Agra.

New Horizons spacecraft cruises past Pluto and its moon, following a journey of more than nine years

Laurel, Maryland, July 14 (ANI): The New Horizons spacecraft sailed past distant Pluto on Tuesday (July 14), capping a reconnaissance of the solar system that began 50 years ago, NASA said. The flyby, which occurred at around 5.19pm IST (Indian standard Time) culminated a 4.88 billion km, 9 1/2 year journey to the solar system's backyard, a region beyond Neptune called the Kuiper Belt which was discovered in 1992. New Horizon measurements have reportedly revealed that Pluto is roughly two-thirds the size of the moon, and probably holds more ice beneath its surface than previously thought. The spacecraft is so far from Earth that radio signals, traveling at the speed of light, take about 4 1/2 hours to reach Earth.

Pakistani army rescues Slovenian mountaineer from Karakoram mountain range

Karakoram Mountain Ranges/ Skardu, July 14 (ANI): Kajetan Rock Decman, a Slovenian climber who fell sick during a Karakoram expedition was rescued by an Army Aviation helicopter in Pakistan. According to the statement, the Pak army responded to a request to save Decman, who was part of a seven-member mountaineering expedition, after he suffered 'high altitude sickness' in an attempt to reach International Hiking and Altitude Expedition Camp (IHEC). Decman fell sick when they reached a height of 6000 metres (18000 ft). He was airlifted to Skardu for treatment where his condition is said to be stable. A total of five mountaineering teams have reached K-2 base camp so far this season. Since avalanches on the mountains have increased following the recent earthquake in China, most of the teams have decided to move their acclimatization process to neighbouring Broad Peak (8,051m).

Yemen airstrikes continue to defy UN truce, at least 21 civilians killed

New York/ Yemen, July 14 (ANI): Saudi-led air raids have killed at least 21 civilians in Yemen's capital Sanaa despite an UN-declared truce aimed at delivering desperately needed aid, military sources said. Residents say the air strikes began shortly after midnight. Planes from a Saudi-led coalition arrived in the capital city, Sanaa, and dropped their deadly cargo. A Saudi-led coalition of Arab states has been bombing the Iranian-allied Houthi rebel movement and army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh since late March in a bid to restore to exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power. No dialogue with India without Kashmir on the agenda, says Pak

Islamabad, July 13 (ANI): Pakistan's National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz said on Monday that there will be no dialogue with India without Kashmir on the agenda. Aziz said that Kashmir tops the list of outstanding issues with India. PM Modi arrives in Qurghonteppa, visits India-Tajikistan friendly hospital

Qurghonteppa, July 13 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Qurghonteppa city of Tajikistan on Monday. Modi was accorded a warm and traditional welcome at the airport by the authorities there. He then visited the India-Tajikistan friendly hospital in Qurghonteppa along with Tajak President Rahmon. Modi took a tour of the hospital and was seen interacting with a few patients admitted there.
