Search teams in Nepal use hands and heavy machinery to clear quake rubble

Kathmandu, May 01 (ANI): Search and rescue teams started the grim task of removing piles of earthquake rubble for the sixth day on Friday nearly a week after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the country. They used heavy machinery as well as their bare hands to clear debris of crushed buildings and centuries-old temples. Nepal's Armed Police Force and military were at Durbar Square, a UNESCO world heritage site, picking rubble and rearranging the pagoda-style temples, brick by brick. Eventually, he said, he believed the government will be able to rebuild the site back to the way it was. Many Nepalis have been sleeping in the open since Saturday's (April 25) quake. According to the United Nations, 600,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.

Scuffles break out between Nepalese police and evacuees

Kathmandu, May 01 (ANI): Scuffles broke out between Nepalese police and a crowd of people trying to leave Kathmandu for their hometowns in the countryside after the devastating earthquake killed over 5,000 people. A private boarding school announced that it was organising free bus trips for those who want to go back home and thousands turned up hoping to get on the buses. At one point, police had to shut the gates of the school to keep the large crowd out of the school compound. Scuffles soon broke out when people got angry over whether they will be able to board a bus. Some police used baton to disperse the crowd. Kathmandu has witnessed a mass exodus of people trying to leave the ravaged capital and to re-unite with their families in other parts of the country. However, an acute shortage of vehicles to ferry such large numbers out of the capital has led to intermittent altercations between police and crowds.

Pakistan denies reports about beef in food packets for Nepal quake victims

Islamabad, May 01 (ANI): Pakistan strongly denied reports in the media that packets of Ready to Eat Meals dispatched to Nepal for victims of the recent earthquake contained beef. Nepal, a Hindu nation, considers cows as sacred and cow slaughter and consumption of beef is punishable by 12 years in prison. Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Tasnim Aslam said that Pakistan dispatched its first medical aid and relief supplies to Nepal on April 26, aboard two C-130 aircraft, which included medicines, blankets, tents, water, rice, lentils, search and rescue equipment and sniffing dogs. The second phase of Pakistan relief assistance dispatched on two C-130 aircraft on April 28, carried tents, blankets, MRE (Meal-Ready-to-Eat), medicines and search and rescue equipment. Devastation, Earthquake, Beef Masala, Relief Material, Cow Slaughter, SAARC

Kathmandu, April 30 (ANI): Already reeling under devastation caused by massive earthquake Nepal is now upset over Pakistan sending packets of 'beef masala' as part of relief material to the valley. Pakistan's aid included around 2,000 meals, ready-to-eat packs and bottled water. But this relief effort from Pakistan took an unpleasant turn after some of the food packets sent in reportedly contained beef. Indian doctors from the medical team sent to Nepal found the food packets that were labeled 'beef masala'. A country with strict laws against cow slaughter and religious sentiments attached, a gesture like this by Pakistan during the most difficult times that Nepal is facing has the potential to trigger diplomatic acrimony between the SAARC member countries.

Mexican mountaineer recounts Nepal earthquake horror from Everest

Kathmandu, April 30 (ANI): A Mexican mountaineer who was climbing up Mount Everest when a deadly 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal returned home to Mexico and recounted his dramatic story of survival as avalanches roared down the massive mountain. The avalanche on Mount Everest killed at least 18 climbers and guides, including four foreigners, the worst disaster on the world's highest peak, at the start of the main climbing season. But Pastor's position on the mountain and the organisation at his camp allowed him to emerge unscathed. Tourism ministry officials in Nepal have estimated that at least 1,000 climbers, including about 400 foreigners, had been at base camp or on Everest when the earthquake struck. Having climbed Everest twice before, Pastor said he had anticipated avalanches but never earthquakes on his trek to the summit.
