12 feared dead in Paris shooting at Charlie Hebdo headquarters

Paris, Jan 07 (ANI): According to the reports, at least 12 people were killed and 10 wounded after masked gunmen stormed the offices of a French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on Wednesday. Police and emergency personnel rushed to the scene to take victims to medical attention. Reportedly, a cartoon mocking ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was tweeted by the French magazine Charlie Hebdo just an hour before the gunmen bursted into their offices. French President Francois Hollande arrived at the scene of a mass shooting which took place at the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo. Hollande called the slayings a "terror attack", according to Prime Minister's office. Separately, the government said it was raising France's national security level to the highest notch.

Cameron says Paris attack 'barbaric', says press freedom must be defended

London, Jan 07 (ANI): British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday condemned the barbaric attack on the Paris offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo and said Britain stood with France in the fight against terror. According to the reports, at least 12 people were killed and 10 wounded after masked gunmen stormed the offices of a French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris. Pakistan's Supreme Court denies bail to 26/11 Mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi

Islamabad, Jan 07 (ANI): The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday setting aside Islamabad High Court's (IHC) decision, denied suspension of the detention of Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, accused of plotting the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. According to the media reports, Pak SC declared IHC's order of releasing Lakhvi from jail as void and opined that the decision to grant bail to Lakhvi was taken in a hurry. The reports further stated that, Pak SC directed IHC to hear arguments of Lakhvi's lawyer and the Central Government of Pakistan. Earlier, the Islamabad High Court had ordered conditional release of Lakhvi and had asked him to deposit a security bond of Rs 1 million in response to his petition seeking an end to his detention.

Bangladesh arrests key opposition figure Protest erupts

Dhaka, Jan 07 (ANI): Bangladesh government arrested a key opposition figure and deployed thousands of police as opposition protests entered a second day, after four activists were killed and scores were injured on the first anniversary of last year's disputed polls. The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cracked down on displays of anti-government sentiment in the capital, Dhaka, as opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia stepped up calls for fresh elections. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to scatter protesters in Dhaka and elsewhere. Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir of Khaleda's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was detained on Tuesday as he stepped out of Dhaka's National Press Club, where he had taken shelter, police said. Before being detained, Alamgir said there was no democracy left in Bangladesh. Female suicide bomber hits police station in Istanbul, kills one

Istanbul, Jan 07 (ANI): A female suicide bomber blew herself up inside a police station in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district, killing one officer and wounding another, the city's governor. Police sealed off the street where the attack happened. The woman spoke english as she entered the building but her nationality and identity were unknown, Governor Vasip Sahin told reporters at the scene. Turkish media later said one of the officers died from his wounds. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the bombing comes less than a week after far-left group DHKP-C said it was behind a grenade attack on police near the prime minister's office in Istanbul. The group was also behind a suicide bombing at the US Embassy last year as well as attacks on Turkish police stations. Turkey also faces other security threats.

Japan eyes India and ASEAN market for business expansion

Tokyo, Jan 6 (ANI): For safe and smooth public transportation, a signaling system plays a major role. Japan's Kyosan Electric Manufacturing Corporation has a hundred year of history of developing road traffic and railway signal systems, besides power conversion systems. The company first introduced traffic signal technology based on the union switch and signals in 1920s, and started domestic manufacturing by brushing up its technology. Kyosan produced the first traffic signal system in Japan in 1956. With a top domestic share in the signal system, Kyosan have expanded its operations in more than 10 countries overseas. Its president, Tsutomu Tokodai, says the company has achieved the reputation of having the world's most safe traffic system. Kyosan Electric Manufacturing Corporation has also forayed into the Indian market and is planning to venture into other South Asian countries, including Bangladesh.

Bangladesh police besiege Khaleda Zia ahead of first anniversary of elections

Dhaka, Jan 5 (ANI): Bangladesh is today marking the first anniversary of the controversial 2014 prime ministerial elections that was boycotted by the BNP-led coalition. Earlier on Sunday, police besieged former Bangladesh Prime Minister and chief of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia, at her office, amid fears of violence as the opposition party planned rallies across the country. The BNP and its allies had boycotted the election that was held in January 05, 2014 which was marred by deadly unrest. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held to her stance that a fresh poll can be called only if her rivals halt violence. The BNP denounced Hasina's scrapping of the practice of having a caretaker government oversee elections. On Sunday, the BNP party workers held a protest in front of the party office to know the reason as to why the police besieged the party chief.

Former Bangladesh president slams Tarique Rahman for calling Mujib 'Razakar'

Dhaka, Jan 02 (ANI): Former president of Bangladesh and Jatiya Party Chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad, slammed former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman for disrespecting nationalist leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and using derogatory remark against him. Ershad took a dig at senior vice-chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Tarique while addressing a rally of his Jatiya Party on its 29th founding anniversary in Dhaka and said he is introducing nasty politics in the country. Tarique, on December 15 in London, had reportedly said Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a 'razakar' - a collaborator with Pakistan occupation army in 1971. An arrest warrant of Tarique has been issued by a Dhaka court.

Pakistan lodges protest against ceasefire violation, demands India to investigate

Indonesia says six bodies recovered so far, search hampered by bad weather

Jakarta, Dec 31 (ANI): Indonesian search and rescue officials said on Wednesday six bodies have been recovered so far but adverse weather was hampering their operation off Borneo. Bodies as well as debris were found on Tuesday (December 30) for the first time since the AirAsia flight went missing on Sunday (December 28). Search crews have yet to retrieve the black boxes of the plane.

Indonesia officials find bodies in search for missing jet

Indonesia, Dec 30 (ANI): Search teams scouring the area for signs of the missing AirAsia jet spotted dead bodies apart from debris floating off Indonesia's Kalimantan Coast. The Search and Rescue agency Chief said the debris was likely to be from the AirAsia jet, which disappeared on Sunday with 162 people on board. Nearby ships are heading to the area, where the objects were found. The debris needs to be analyzed before a 100 per cent confirmation can be made. Relatives of passengers gathered at a crisis centre watching the pictures and were visibly shocked, struggling to cope with their grief.

India, Bangladesh agree to deal with infiltration issue post four-day conference of BGB and BSF

Dhaka, Dec 30 (ANI): Director Generals of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India's Border Security Force (BSF) discussed inadvertent crossing issue and agreed to deal with the matter under a specified plan as four-day talks concluded. The four-day conference between the two paramilitary forces had begun in Dhaka city on Friday. BGB Director General Major General Aziz Ahmed, led a 23-member delegation and held talks with BSF Director General Devendra Kumar Pathak, who was accompanied by 20-member delegation. Both the countries discussed various issues relating to border security, smuggling, infiltration and curbing trans-border crimes. Major General Aziz Ahmed said that the apprehension of people while crossing the border would be dealt with under a border management plan. The two countries had signed the CBMP in July 2011 according to which the border guards of the two countries would exchange information on vulnerable areas to ensure joint patrolling in a coordinated manner.

BNP stage protest against ban on election rally in Bangladesh, one killed

Dhaka, Dec 30 (ANI): Bangladesh's main opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held a strike against the government for obstructing a rally hosted by one of their party leaders. BNP was not allowed to stage a rally in Gazipur on December 27 as the ruling Awami League party had also called for a rally at the same venue. The roads were empty while offices, schools and shops were closed in capital city of Dhaka. BNP supporters held big banners and shouted slogans against the government while the strike turned violent as party supporters clashed with police, which led to the killing of one woman. Three police men were also injured.

Indonesia search and rescue officials fear Missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 to be 'at bottom of sea'

Belitung, Dec 29 (ANI): Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) on Monday continued to look for a missing AirAsia plane carrying 162 passengers that went missing the previous day. An official said that the plane could be at the bottom of the sea after it was presumed to have crashed off the Indonesian coast, as countries around Asia sent ships and planes to help in the search effort. BASARNAS deployed seven rescue boats and three helicopters in the Karimata Strait and west of Belitung Island to support the search mission for the missing flight QZ 8501, but high waves and winds hampered the operation. The Indonesia AirAsia plane, an Airbus A320-200, disappeared after its pilot failed to get permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore on Sunday.

Bangladesh Information minister calls former PM Khaleda Zia biggest enemy of democracy

Dhaka, Dec 29 (ANI): Bangladesh Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu called former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia as biggest enemy of democracy in the country. He was addressing audience during the inauguration of a documentary film made by human rights activist and journalist Shahriar Kabir, called "Whither Bangladesh" - clash between secular humanism and ideology of Shariah-based statehood in Bangladesh. The function was organised by the South Asian People's Union against Fundamentalism and Communalism. In 'Whither Bangladesh', Kabir attempts to depict fundamentalist militant activities in Bangladesh and its nexus with global militant network.

AirAsia flight QZ8501 from Indonesia to Singapore missing with 162 on board

London, Dec 28 (ANI): AirAsia flight QZ8501 travelling from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board has lost contact with air traffic control. The airlines' authorities said in a statement that the rescue operations and search for the flight were being conducted under the guidance of Civil Aviation Authority. An official with the transport ministry said that the plane lost contact over the Java Sea between Surabaya and Singapore. The Air Asia also said in a statement that 162 passengers and crew were onboard of which 1 is from Singapore, 1 from Malaysia, 3 from South Korean and 157 from Indonesia.

Indonesia pay respect to 2004 tsunami victims to mark 10th anniversary of disaster

Indonesia, Dec 26 (ANI): Indonesian official offered floral tributes to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami on Friday as the region commemorated the 10th anniversary of the disaster. In Siron mass grave, where thousands were killed in the tsunami were buried, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his wife Mufidah led a delegation of a dozen officials who paid their respects to those who died. The 10-meter killer wave, triggered by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off western Indonesia, wiped out most of the coastal areas in the region, leaving at least 226,000 people dead. Indonesia was the worst hit area with at least 168,000 people dead in Aceh province alone, the closest point to the epicenter.
