Karachi/ Islamabad, Nov 10 (ANI): Pakistani Christians recently held protests and prayers for a Christian couple who were beaten to death and their bodies burned for allegedly desecrating a copy of the Koran earlier this week. About two hundred people from the Christian community took to streets of the southern city of Karachi holding banners, placards and holy crosses. In the capital Islamabad, about hundred men and women gathered to express solidarity with the couple. They held placards and sang dirges. Smaller protests were held in other cities and prayers were offered in churches. Blasphemy charges, even when they go to court, are punished by death in Muslim-majority Pakistan. They are hard to fight because the law does not define clearly what is blasphemous.
Islamabad, Nov 07 (ANI): Pakistan rejected Indian Defence Minister's tough stance on dialogue, saying it does not accept conditions on composite dialogue with the arch rival. Answering a question about Arun Jaitley's statement that Pakistan had to decide whether they want to be in talks with the Indian government or the separatists, foreign ministry spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said dialogue with India is not a favour, but a necessity for peace and development in South Asia. A day earlier, Jaitley had drawn a "red line" and said Pakistan had to reconsider whether it wanted to speak to the Government of India or "to those who want to break India." Aslam said All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leaders were not separatists, but freedom fighters who are carrying out their movement from an occupied territory.

Dhaka, Nov 5 (ANI): Supporters of Bangladesh ruling Awami League party took to street on Wednesday against the strike called by Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat had called a three-day strike to protest against the death sentence pronounced by the court for their party chief accused of committing war crimes. Awami League Party Leader Mofazzal Hossain Maya said that Bengali community has rejected the strike in support of the court's decision. Bangladesh's Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death penalty for an Islamist leader over atrocities committed during the country's war of independence from Pakistan more than four decades ago. On Monday, Jamaat activists had smashed a dozen of vehicles in Gazipur, on the outskirts of the capital, Dhaka, where several crude bombs went off.
Tokyo, Nov 05 (ANI): Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday was awarded "Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers", one of Japan's highest awards from Japanese Emperor Akihito, as part of a bi-annual decoration ceremony. He received the highest possible award in the Orders of the Rising Sun for his significant contribution to the enhancement of relations and promotion of friendship between Japan and India for about 35 years. It was first awarded in 1888 and is only topped by the Supreme Orders of the Chrysanthemum. More than 4,000 people received an award during this session for their contributions to cultural development or the public good.
Dhaka, Nov 5 (ANI): Speakers from different sectors with a common conviction to erase Jamaat-e-Islami party came together at a forum in Bangladesh's capital city Dhaka recently. They demanded punishment for those who have been convicted in the trial of war criminals of 1971 and said the punishment should not be reviewed under any circumstances and also presidential mercy must not be rewarded. Afroz was addressing the 'forum for secular Bangladesh and trial of war criminals of 1971' organised on the occasion of the 42nd year of Bangladesh's Constitution. Meanwhile, journalist and human rights activist Shahriar Kabir, during his address to the gathering at the seminar, emphasized that until and unless Jamaat-e-Islami is rooted out from Bangladesh, the country will never be able to fulfill its dream of the dead soldiers who fought the war of liberation.

Lahore, Nov 03 (ANI): At least 55 people were killed and more than 150 injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the Indo- Pak border. The attack occurred shortly after a daily ceremony when troops from both sides simultaneously lower the two nations' flags. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was a response to the Pakistani army's actions against their positions in tribal areas straddling Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. State police Chief Mushtaq Sukhera said that the explosion hit near the checkpoint at the Wagah border crossing as hundreds of people were returning from the military ceremony on the outskirts of Lahore. The daily flag-hoisting ceremonies by the Pakistani and the Indian military on their respective sides of the border draw crowds of hundreds. Some of the victims were taken to the city's Mayo hospital. Rani Begum was among the unfortunate relatives at the hospital.
California, Nov 01 (ANI): Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo space tourism rocket crashed during a test flight at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, killing one of the two pilots aboard and seriously injuring the other. The crash of the vehicle, undergoing its first powered test flight since January over the Mojave Desert, 150 km north of Los Angeles, came days after another private space company, Orbital Sciences Corp, lost a rocket in an explosion moments after liftoff in Virginia. Stuart Witt, chief executive of the space port, said officials were not ready to "speculate on the cause" of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending one of its "go-teams" to investigate the accident. George Whitesides, chief executive of Virgin Galactic, said he expected Branson to arrive by Saturday morning.
Karachi/ Lahore, Nov 01 (ANI): Activists of Pakistan's Jamaat-e-Islami took to streets in protest against the death sentence awarded to the Bangladesh Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party Chief Motiur Rahman Nizami, by the Bangladesh war crimes tribunal. Bangladesh's war crimes tribunal sentenced the chief of the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party to death on Wednesday for crimes against humanity, including genocide, torture and rape, during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. Denouncing the death sentence of Nizami, more than one hundred activists and supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami marched through the streets in Pakistan's port city of Karachi. About two hundred activists staged protest in the city of Lahore. A smaller protest was held in the capital Islamabad.
New Delhi, Oct 31 (ANI): Former Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson, who was wanted in connection with the December 1984 Bhopal gas leak case, died on September 29 at a nursing home in Vero Beach, Florida. He was 92 years of age. Anderson led Union Carbide when thousands were killed in a gas leak at its plant in India, which led to multiple calls for his extradition to India to face prosecution for his role. Anderson was arrested following the incident and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, grievous assault and killing and poisoning human beings and animals. He was subsequently released on bail under controversial circumstances.
Dhaka, Oct 30 (ANI): Dhaka observed a 24-hour general strike on Thursday protesting against the death sentence awarded to the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party chief, Motiur Rahman Nizami, by the Bangladesh war crimes tribunal, as supporters of Jamaat said the government had used the tribunal to weaken its political opponents. However, supporters of Bangladesh's ruling Awami league said they will not allow the call for shut down to be successful. Students of Dhaka University staged a protest and shouted slogans against Jamaat-e-Islami and said Nizami must pay for the war crimes committed by him. Sri Lanka, Oct 30 (ANI): Hopes of finding survivors under the mud and rubble of a landslide in south-central Sri Lanka had run out by first light on Thursday, though a government minister cut the estimated death toll to more than 100 from 300 the previous night. The landslide, which stretched 3 km, engulfed the tea-plantation village of Haldummulla, 190 km from the capital Colombo on Wednesday (October 29) after months of heavy monsoon rain. Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that he did not think there could be any survivors, but revised the estimated death toll to 192 from 300 the previous evening. The centre said 150 houses were buried in the landslide. At the disaster site, hundreds of soldiers and government officials resumed search and clearing operations, using three earth-moving machines that rumbled amid broken trees, blocks of concrete, tin roofing and muddied clothes.
Karachi, Oct 29 (ANI): Pakistan Police claimed to have arrested four suspects allegedly involved in facilitating the perpetrators of a deadly attack on Pakistan's busiest Karachi Jinnah International Airport in June. Additional Inspector General of police from Crime Investigation department (CID), Saqib Ismail, said that the arrested men abetted the militants who had launched the attack. Another police official said the suspects were detained from two different areas in the eastern part of Karachi. He said that police recovered a large number of weapons from the arrested men.

New Delhi, Oct 21 (ANI): Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in jail for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead. Pistorius had shot Steenkamp dead on Valentines Day last year and had maintained that he mistook her for an intruder in his Pretoria home. The double amputee athlete had been earlier cleared of premeditated murder with the judge charging Pistorius of culpable homicide. The defence had demanded that Pistorius be subjected to house arrest on account of his disability but prosecutor Gerrie Nel had argued for a minimum ten years imprisonment, saying that it would be 'shockingly disproportionate' if anything less was given.

Finland, Oct 15 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee arrived in Finland on a two-day official visit after completing his visit to Norway. He was received by Secretary of State Peter Stenlund at the airport in Helsinki. Mukherjee is accompanied by a high level delegation to Finland where he is expected to meet Finnish president, prime minister, foreign minister and the speaker. He will address a Business Seminar in Helsinki and attend an official lunch hosted by its Mayor. He will also visit 'Arktikum' museum, Arctic Science Centre, Rovaniemi and cross the Arctic Circle. Mukherjee is to return to India on October 17.
