Tehran, Aug 10 (ANI): An Iranian passenger plane crashed on Sunday while taking off from an airport near the capital Tehran, killing at least 38 people onboard. According to state media, an Iran-140 Sepahan Air passenger plane bound for Tabas in northeast Iran with 48 passengers and crew on board crashed on a road near Tehran's Mehrabad airport. Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said that eight or nine had survived and quoted a doctor as saying that one of the injured had regained consciousness. State television said 38 people died instantly and 10 were injured and were transferred to hospital in critical condition.
Israeli-Gaza Border, Aug 09 (ANI): Israeli tanks gathered on the border with Gaza on Saturday as a brief three-day peace crumbled on Friday after militants in Gaza fired dozens of rockets at Israel and Israeli forces responded with their own salvos. Israel launched more than 20 aerial attacks in Gaza early on Saturday and militants fired several rockets at Israel in a second day of violence since a failure to extend an Egyptian-mediated truce that halted a monthlong war earlier this week. Relative of a victim in Gaza talked about his loss. Meanwhile, Hamas blamed Israel for the failure of the talks.
Nigeria/ Johannesburg, Aug 09 (ANI): The World Health Organization said that the world's worst outbreak of Ebola that has killed nearly 1,000 people in West Africa represents an international health emergency and could continue spreading for months. Nigeria became the third African nation, after Sierra Leone and Liberia, to declare a national emergency as the region's healthcare systems struggle to cope with the advance of the disease. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's spokesman Reuben Abati outlined the plan to help battle the deadly Ebola virus, after Jonathan declared a national state of emergency, and approved 1.9 billion naira of emergency funds to contain it.
Iraq, Aug 09 (ANI): US warplanes bombed Islamist fighters marching on Iraq's Kurdish capital after President Barack Obama said Washington must act to prevent "genocide" in the strife-torn nation. Islamic State fighters, who have beheaded and crucified captives in their drive to eradicate unbelievers, have advanced to Erbil. They have also seized control of Iraq's biggest dam, which could allow them to flood cities and cut off vital water and electricity supplies. A Pentagon spokesman said that two F/A-18 aircraft from an aircraft carrier in the Gulf had dropped laser-guided 500-pound bombs on a mobile artillery piece used by the fighters to shell Kurdish forces defending Erbil.
New Delhi, Aug 08 (ANI): United States President Barack Obama has sanctioned airstrikes in Northern Iraq against the Islamic State fighters to avoid a possible 'genocide'. Obama on Thursday announced that he had authorized the US military to launch air strikes against ISIS militants in Iraq if they threatened the Kurdish capital of Erbil or the thousands of Yazidi minority civilians trapped on Mount Sinjar, both in northern Iraq. Although, Obama said that the US, after withdrawing its forces from Iraq at the end of 2011, did not intend to get involved into a war again, but the recent developments came in the wake of Iraqi government's request for help. Obama authorized airstrikes amid fears of a humanitarian disaster that has forced thousands of Iraqi minority to flee from their homes to Sinjar mountain where they are reportedly stranded.
Kathmandu, Aug 04 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPM-UML) Chairman KP Oli while on his two day visit to the neighbouring nation. Modi also met Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal as his visit in Nepal ends today. As his last few meetings, Modi also met leaders of Madhesi parties in Nepal and had conversations with them. Modi had earlier in the day offered prayers at Pashupatinath Temple and later tweeted saying, "Felt extremely blessed on offering prayers at the Pashupatinath Temple this morning". The Indian prime minister is scheduled to fly back to the national capital this evening.
Karachi, Aug 04: The influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from volatile North Waziristan into Sindh worries nationalist parties in the province. Sindh Bachao Committee (Save Sindh Committee) in association with a dozen of other Sindhi nationalist parties recently observed a complete shutter down strike across Sindh, including Karachi. Their major concern is the possible invasion of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan militants in the region since after Pakistan Army launched 'Zarh-e-Azb' operation against terrorist groups based in North Waziristan. There are fears about a rise in sectarian violence and other terrorist activities in Sindh. The growth of fundamentalist groups, many with links to armed factions, has been alarmingly rapid in Sindh and has brought violence in its wake.
Glasgow, Aug 04 (ANI): Hailed as the best ever Commonwealth Games by Federation president Prince Tunku Imran, Glasgow 2014 formally concluded a memorable 20th edition of Commonwealth Games with a spectacular ceremony at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Prince Imran told the rejoicing crowd that the Commonwealth Games are known as the Friendly Games. Glasgow has succeeded in making them even more than that. Glaswegian-born singer Lulu began the show with athletes from the 71 Commonwealth nations and territories emerging from tents adorning the Hampden Park track. Singer Kylie Minogue, one of Australia's most famous exports, delighted the Hampden Park crowd after a video had shown a glimpse of what awaits on the Gold Coast in four years time.
Kathmandu, Aug 04 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two day official visit to Nepal, visited Lord Pashupatinath Temple on Monday to offer his prayers. The temple was on high security alert and special arrangements were made for Modi at the temple. In addition to this, he will be meeting Nepal's President Ram Baran Yadav and other leaders of the different political parties in Nepal before leaving for India. Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to undertake a bilateral visit to Nepal in 17 years.
Kathmandu, Aug 04 (ANI): Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, held delegation-level talks with his Nepalese counterpart, Sushil Koirala in Kathmandu during which both the countries signed agreements to deepen cooperation in economic, security and hydropower. Modi's visit is likely to help speed up negotiations on a power trade pact that is at the centre of a new effort to improve ties with a neighbour that serves as a buffer with China. Modi also interacted and shook hands with common people after addressing the Nepal constituent assembly in Kathmandu.
New York, Aug 01 (ANI): The unconditional 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire by Israel and Hamas has begun in Gaza. Israel and Hamas agreed to the ceasefire, with talks on a permanent truce set to begin in Cairo, according to a statement released by the United Nations (UN) and United States. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry released a joint statement on Thursday announcing the ceasefire and calling for all parties to "act with restraint until this humanitarian ceasefire begins, and to fully abide by their commitments during the ceasefire." As the crisis in Gaza continues unabated, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos on Thursday urged the parties to protect civilians from the conflict that has resulted in thousands of casualties and caused widespread displacement and destruction.
Karachi, Aug 01 (ANI): Bodies of at least 20 people, who had drowned while enjoying Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, were recovered from two separate beaches in Pakistan's port city Karachi. Navy helicopters were brought in to assist in the rescue operation but had to be suspended at night when darkness set in. Twelve bodies were recovered from Clifton Beach before the rescue operation was suspended on Wednesday, whereas six bodies were recovered when the operation was re-started the next day. Two bodies were also recovered from Hawks Bay, another popular beach in Karachi.
Mirpur/ Azad Kashmir, July 28: It's been five decades now, the people of Mirpur District in Azad Kashmir continue to remain victims of the Mangla Dam. The multipurpose dam constructed on the Jhelum River at a cost of 1.47 billion USD, generates electricity and provides water for irrigation to Pakistan's rich landlords and industrialists. However, thousands of people from Mirpur who were displaced are living a miserable life. Experts blame Pakistan for vehemently exploiting the resources of Azad Kashmir. In 2009, Pakistan raised the height of Mangla Dam from 1210 feet to 1270 feet increasing the maximum water conservation level from 1202 feet to 1242 feet.

Indian foreign minister Sushma Swaraj is on a three-day visit to Nepal starting Friday. Kathmandu, July 27 (ANI): India's Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Nepalese counterpart Mahendra Bahadur Pandey have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on various projects. The MoU encompasses various projects ranging over issues of economic cooperation and bilateral relations as a step to further strengthen strategic partnership within the two countries. Swaraj said upcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal will open a new chapter of mutually beneficial India-Nepal relationship.
Islamabad, July 25 (ANI): The foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan will meet on August 25 to re-launch the stalled dialogue process between the two countries. Addressing a media briefing in Islamabad, Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry, said that in keeping with the vision of the two prime ministers to improve and establish good neighbourly relations, both sides had agreed on the meeting date during a telephonic conversation between the foreign secretaries of the two countries. The development is being seen as a major breakthrough in the backdrop of hostilities that recently cropped up following skirmishes on the Line of Control. He said the mechanism of Director Generals Military Operations (DGMOs) talking to each other every Tuesday was working well and Pakistan was open to ideas and suggestions to strengthen this mechanism and to increase its effectiveness.
Baghdad, July 24 (ANI): United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon arrived in Baghdad on Thursday for talks with Iraqi leaders on the ongoing fighting with the Islamic State and formation of a new Iraqi government. Ban, who has been on a Middle East tour to seek an end to the fighting in Gaza, is expected to hold a joint news conference with Iraq's Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and meet with the new Speaker of Iraq's parliament Salim al-Jibouri. The advance by Sunni Islamist militants who seized swathes of northern Iraq last month has put the OPEC oil producer's survival in jeopardy. Ban also condemned 'in the strongest terms' the systematic persecution of minority populations in Iraq by Islamic State (IS) and associated armed groups.
Glasgow, July 24 (ANI): The colourful event of Commonwealth Games 2014 kicked off in Glasgow after some enthralling dance and singing performances at the Celtic Park and a minute's silence for the victims of the Malaysian Airlines crash. Queen Elizabeth II travelled by train to Glasgow and declared the games open at the end of the evening's ceremony. Around 6,000 athletes gathered for the opening of the Commonwealth Games. The Games, open to athletes from the 53 Commonwealth of Nations, feature 22 sports. With nations including Jamaica, Kenya, Australia, England, Canada and South Africa participating, there are a significant numbers of Olympic medalists taking part.
Amsterdam, July 24 (ANI): A day of national mourning took place in the Netherlands, as the first bodies of the crashed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 victims arrived back in the country. As the remains were taken for identification at a military base, memorials and a moment of silence were held to remember those who were killed. When the first bodies arrived, thousands gathered to walk in silence. Through the center of Amsterdam, an entire country displayed its resilience. While the identification process began at a medical facility in the town of Hilversum, people of the Netherlands showed solidarity.
