Sensex shrugs off Infosys warning, rallies 318pts

SensexThe Sensex opened 162 points lower at 10,805 and soon touched a low of 10,719 on the back of negative cues from the overseas markets coupled with earnings warning by Infosys.

The index, thereafter, recovered and rebounded into the positive zone helped by steady buying in realty, power and banking stocks.

 
The index rallied to a high of 11,338 - up 618 points from the day's low - towards the fag end of the day. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 318 points at 11,285.

The Mid-cap index soared 4% (137 points) to 3,602, and the Small-cap index rallied 5.3% (208 points) to 4,123.

The BSE Realty index zoomed nearly 9% to 2,313. The Capital Goods index surged 7.4% to 8,043, and the Power index gained 5.2% at 2,166. The Bankex moved up 4.5% to 5,541. The IT index, however, slipped 1.7% to 2,445.

The market breadth was significantly positive - out of 2,703 stocks traded, 2,173 moved up, 463 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

Tata Motors zoomed 11.5% to Rs 281, and DLF soared 10% to Rs 257.

BHEL surged 9.5% to Rs 1,670. Reliance Infrastructure gained 7% at Rs 710.

ICICI Bank and Larsen & Toubro too moved up nearly 7% each to Rs 444 and Rs 879, respectively.

SBI and Ranbaxy advanced over 6% each at Rs 1,296 and Rs 200, respectively.

Sun Pharma and Mahindra & Mahindra added around 5.5% each to Rs 1,211 and Rs 474, respectively.

HDFC, Reliance Communications, Hindalco, Jaiprakash Associates, ACC, Tata Steel, Grasim, Maruti, Bharti Airtel and Reliance were up 3-5% each.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Infosys dropped 2.7% to Rs 1,371. The stock had tumbled to a low of Rs 1,300 in early trades after the company said, that Q1FY10 earnings would drop 5% sequentially.

TCS shed 2.4% at Rs 578, and HDFC Bank was down over 1% at Rs 1,084.

OTHER PROMINENT GAINERS...

Lanco Infratech zoomed nearly 22% to Rs 229. Essar Oil, Sintex, Hindustan Construction, Unitech, Punj Lloyd, Reliance Capital, Nagarjuna Construction and NMDC rallied 13-18% each.

...AND THE LOSERS

Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services shed 4.5% at Rs 225. Koutons Retail, Nestle, Castrol, Gail India, Rei Agro and LIC Housing Finance were down over 1% each.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance Capital topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 343.59 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 325 crore), Essar Oil (Rs 271.17 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 266.70 crore) and DLF (Rs 202.85 crore).

Unitech led the volume charts with trades of around 4.24 crore shares followed by Cals Refineries (3.14 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (2.65 crore), Suzlon (1.84 crore) and Essar Oil (1.66 crore).
