| POSTAL SUBSIDY: Delivery mechanism of the subsidy needs to be addressed
| | | | The Department of Posts, which delivers letters, parcels and money orders to remote areas, continues to be in the red with its deficit expected to rise to Rs 1,482.2 crore in 2007-08, up 18 per cent from Rs 1,249.5 crore in 2006-07.
| | | | “Redefining the rationale and the delivery mechanism of the subsidy needs to be addressed urgently, more so in view of the fact that a large number of private couriers are operating in the market without any regulator,” the Economic Survey noted.
| | | | Currently, all services of post offices are subsidised with user charges in the postal system covering around 78 per cent of the costs. It is worth noting that 22 per cent of the expenditure is on account of pension liability. "If this amount is excluded then the revenue of the department roughly covers its expenditure," the survey added.
| | | | On the ongoing developments in the department, the survey said that the government is considering appropriate amendments to the Indian Post Office Act, 1898. | | | | | |
