Manish Sisodia
A senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Manish Sisodia is the deputy chief minister of Delhi in the Arvind Kejriwal-led government. Sisodia is in charge of several important departments — finance, education, planning, urban development, revenue, services, local bodies, land & buildings, higher education, training & technical education, vigilance, cooperative societies, information technology, and information & publicity. Importantly, he supervises all departments that have not been allotted to any other minister and is considered the architect of the AAP initiative of overhauling the education system in Delhi government schools.
Before joining the AAP, Sisodia worked as a journalist with Zee News and All India Radio from 1996 to 2005. He later quit journalism to take part in the agitation for Right to Information (RTI) and played a significant role in laying the foundation for the Jan Lokpal movement, led by Anna Hazare. In 2006, Sisodia founded the Public Cause Research Foundation along with Kejriwal.
In 2012, he became a member of the political affairs committee and a year later he was elected as a Member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Nakul Bhardwaj by 11,478 votes. In the 2015 Delhi elections, which was swept by the AAP with a win in 67 of the 70 constituencies, Sisodia was re-elected to the Delhi Assembly from Patparganj in East Delhi, beating the BJP’s Vinod Kumar Binny by over 24,000 votes. Sisodia previously established a non-governmental organisation ‘Kabir’ in Delhi to spread awareness about RTI also became an active volunteer of NGO Parivartan.
One of the oldest associates of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Sisodia holds a diploma in journalism from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Both he and Kejriwal are the founding members of the AAP.
