Who is Vishnu Deo Sai?

Vishnu Deo Sai is an Indian politician, born on 21 February 1964, who was sworn in as the fourth chief minister of Chattisgarh on 13 December 2023. He is the first unopposed tribal leader to hold the position and has served as the state leader of Bharatiya Janata Party for Chhattisgarh from 2020 until 2022.

He was a 16th Lok Sabha member representing the Kunkuri constituency of Chhattisgarh. He was Union Minister of State for Steel, Labour & Employment in PM Modi’s first council of ministers in 2014.

Vishnu Deo Sai, a political veteran and tribal face who previously held the position of Union minister, emerged as the underdog in the week-long race for Chhattisgarh's chief minister position. Vishnu Deo was among the top CM post competitors, however, was not considered the leader in that frame of mind among Raman Singh and Renuka Singh.

On 21 February 1964, Vishnu Deo Sai was born to a farmer's family in Bagia village of Jashpur region in the province of Chhattisgarh. He did his higher secondary schooling in Loyola Secondary School at Kunkuri, Jashpur.

Chhattisgarh election 2023
The BJP on December 3 wrested power from the Congress in Chhattisgarh, winning 54 of the 90 seats in the state assembly, while the huge old party got 35 seats. In 2018, the saffron party suffered a significant defeat in Chhattisgarh's tribal-dominated assembly seats, but this time it performed well, winning 17 of the 29 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

29 seats are reserved for the ST category in the 90 member Chhattisgarh assembly, which is around 32 per cent of the state's population. BJP won 17 tribal-dominated seats of the 29 reserved seats.

The polling experts say that the party won the tribal belt thanks to public rallies held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP chief JP Nadda in the tribal belt, the launch of the party's two parivartan yatras from tribal pockets, and pre-poll promises.

BJP's senior tribal leaders who have won this time from reserved seats for the ST community are Union minister Renuka Singh (Bharatpur-Sonhat), MP Gomti Sai (Pathalgaon), former state ministers Ramvichar Netam (Ramanujganj), former Union minister Vishnu Deo Sai (Kunkuri), Kedar Kashyap (Narayanpur) and Lata Usendi (Kondagaon).
