The Railway Recruitment Boards have issued over 9,000 appointment letters in the first quarter and will offer appointments to more than 50,000 candidates in the financial year 2025-26, the ministry on Wednesday said. "Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have since November 2024 conducted Computer Based Tests (CBTs) for more than 1.86 crore candidates for seven different notifications comprising 55,197 vacancies," the Railway Ministry said in a press note. "This will enable RRBs to offer appointments to more than 50,000 candidates in financial year 2025-26. More than 9,000 appointments have already been issued by RRBs in first quarter of this financial year," it added. The ministry said that conducting CBTs for RRB exams is a huge exercise requiring a lot of planning and coordination. The general managers of Central and South Coast Railway Zones have been given additional charge by the Ministry of Railways to look after the affairs of Western and South Central zone, respectively, for three months. The GMs of these two zones are superannuating on June 30, 2025. However, the ministry, according to a section of experts, failed to complete the selection process on time. Ministry officials, meanwhile, said the selection process is going on and it is not for the first time that GMs of one zone have been given additional charge of other zones. "It doesn't hamper any work, implementation of plans or decision-making process in any zone," a railway official said. The railway ministry will fill 60 per cent posts of train controllers through the direct recruitment process conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). According to the reforms announced by the ministry on June 25, 60 per cent vacancies in the control department will be filled with graduate-level candidates recruited directly by the RRB. "How this examination will be conducted and what it will be called are some of the issues yet to be decided by the competent authority," Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity, Railway Board, said. Officials associated with the control department said till 2017, direct recruitment used to happen in the department through the Railway Traffic Apprentice Exams conducted by the RRB.
