BS Reporter Kolkata
The book called 'Car & Driving Handbook' published by Guide India Publication was the first such volume in the country, claimed its publishers.

The volume was launched by Jawed Shamim, IPS, deputy commissioner (traffic), Kolkata Police, recently.

The book explained traffic rules and offenses and was aimed at car owners.

"India does not have general motoring guidebook, this book is an essential one for every car owner in India" said Souvik Ghosh, general manger, marketing of Guide India Publication.

Shamim added: "People lack knowledge regarding car and driving which is the reason behind the high rate of accidents here".

This book contained chapters on traffic offenses and safety measures.

Guide India Publication along with Indianoil Corporation was taking this initiative to educate the motorists in a programme called ADD ( A Drive to Drive).

Incentive would be given to private car owners from selected outlets of Indian Oil throughout Kolkata in the form of 1 litre of petrol, or diesel or lubricant worth Rs 50, free on purchase of every copy of this book.

The programme would continue till November 9.

S B Endow, deputy manager (Kolkata sales) of Indian Oil Corporation. said, "We think people of Kolkata will appreciate this endeavour".

The book will be sold through various driving schools and car dealers in Kolkata. The print run initially was 1 lakh copies, to be circulated throughout India.

The initiative has been started in Kolkata and later would be rolled out to Delhi and Mumbai.
