Govt rates seats of higher learning

The National Institutional Ranking Framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. Most of the 22 ranking parameters are similar to those employed globally but some are also India-centric, explains the India Rankings 2016 report, which the government released for the first time on Monday.

Ranking methods have been worked out for six categories of institutions - engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture, universities and colleges. But no rankings are being announced this year for architecture and general degree colleges due to non-representative participation, it says.

Within each discipline, there was provision for separate ranking in two categories - institutions engaged in research and teaching (Category A), and those mainly in teaching (Category B). Data from Category B institutions continued to exhibit major inconsistencies despite efforts to remove these, said the India Rankings 2016 report. It was decided, therefore, that no rankings be announced for Category B institutions this year, the report adds. Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said efforts were on to make this ranking system an annual affair and to add more categories.
