The protracted trust vote proceedings ended in the Karnataka Assembly on Tuesday evening, with the 14-month-old H D Kumaraswamy-led Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress coalition government losing the confidence motion. There were 105 against and 99 votes for the government, with 20 legislators remaining absent in the 224-member House.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it would stake claim to form the next government. B S Yeddyurappa (76), the BJP’s state unit chief who is expected to become chief minister for a fourth time, said people were fed up with the Kumaraswamy government and assured people of a development-oriented government.
