Mumbai gangrape: Accused Vijay's family claims they have disowned him

The family has been asked to vacate their one room flat in Virar

BS Reporter Mumbai
Vijay Jadhav (19), one of the five accused in the recent gang-rape of Mumbai photojournalist has invoked strong emotional reactions from his family, who speak for the first time since his arrest.

Pramila Jadhav, mother of Vijay told the media that she has disowned her son for his ghastly behaviour and the wrong company he kept, as reported by Mumbai Mirror and The Times Of India. She however also quickly added that her son is not involved in the rape.

Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, she said, "Being a mother, I can only say that he has been framed by his friends."

News reports from DNA also reveal that Vijay's family had been troubled by his involvement in petty crimes for a long time, as he was thrown out of the house a few months back.

Couple of weeks before the gang-rape incident, Vijay was allegedly trashed by passers-by outside Kurla station, as they caught him molesting a 27-year old woman.

“Two weeks ago, he was thrashed by a crowd outside Kurla station. Badly beaten, he managed to escape and came to Virar,” said Pramila Jadhav to DNA.

This is however not the end of Vijay's family's grievances.

Media reports have also stated that the entire family, who have been residing in a one-room flat at Jai Ambe Park, Virar (East), for almost a year, have now been asked to vacate the flat, because of Vijay and his wrong doings.

"We disowned him because of his wrongdoings. Now we have to leave this flat because of him," Pramila said to The Times of India.

The family has been given a period of two days to vacate the flat.

A neighbour of the family told DNA, “We are ashamed that a rapist lives in our building. We have asked the family to vacate the flat as we don’t want our image to be tarnished. He should be given severe punishment.”

The photojournalist, who worked as an intern with an English magazine, was gang-raped by Vijay Jadhav and four others on Thursday evening when she had gone to the deserted Shakti Mills compound in Lower Parel with a male colleague on assignment.
