Among the development works launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during his two-day visit to Mysuru included inauguration of a Permanent Aadhar Enrolment centre (PAEC) that makes easy Aadhar registration.

Among the seven who received the Aadhar cards at the launch, were transgenders, who have been identified under a separate group of 'others' by the Supreme Court. The PAEC facility was inaugurated at the Mysore One service centre in Gokulam on Wednesday, at a function organised by the Centre for e-Governance, in association with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Stating that the PAECs would be opened across the state in 'nada kacheris' and citizen service centres like BangaloreOne, and MysoreOne in the first phase and in all gram panchayats in the second phase, Siddaramaiah said about 47.7 million people had enrolled for Aadhar so far in the state, thus accounting for 78 per cent of the population. Enrollment centres were already functioning in 872 nada kacheries in Karnataka.

The Aadhar cards came with special tamper-proof technology and cannot be duplicated, he added asking people of the state to enroll for Aadhar it would help in obtaining many benefits of the government. He recalled that the Aadhar enrollment was initially launched in Mysuru as a pilot project and subsequently extended all over the country.

The CM launched development works amounting to Rs 128 crore in the Narasimharaja constituency and Rs 72 crore development works, including drinking water facility for 30 villages between Mysuru and Nanjanagudu area. The Rs 32 crore drinking water project would benefit 72,000 villagers in 30 villages, he said, adding it would be extended to another 11 villages at a cost of Rs 11 crore.

Stating that Mysuru would be developed as a global tourist destination with touristic facilities, he said the government had already sanctioned a Rs 10 crore package for the purpose. A ropeway would be built to draw more people to the Chamundi Hills. It may be recalled that the ropeway project, mooted a few years ago, is being opposed by concerned citizens, including environmentalists.

Siddaramaiah, who hails from Mysuru district, was non-committal on Tuesday on locating the proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mysuru. He said, he was CM for the entire state and various parameters had to be taken into account as there was a demand to locate the IIT in Raichuru, Dharwada and Hassana too.

He reiterated that the state government's commitment to the implementation of the Mekedatu, which is being opposed by Tamil Nadu, and said the government had set apart Rs 25 crore for a detailed project report.

He hinted at a new comprehensive development plan (CDP) would be introduced for the overall development of Mysuru in place of the earlier one drafted during the BJP government in the state, which he said favoured a section of land developers. A decision would be taken after discussions with experts, the chief minister added.
