Air Force jawan commits suicide in J&K

Press Trust of India Srinagar

A jawan allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at the Air Force headquarters in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir today, a police spokesman said.

Krishan Kumar, a radar fitter in Unit 3005 Squad, hanged himself to death at the Air Force headquarters at Koil, the spokesman said. He said the jawan was found dead this morning inside his room, which was locked from inside.

Suicides among army and other paramilitary forces have shown an alarming increase over the past couple of years prompting the authorities to take special classes to minimise stress which was said to be the major cause behind the suicides. However, Kumar's death is the first such incident in recent times in the valley where the situation has appreciably improved to a large extent after nearly two decades of violence. Suicides among the civilians is also on increase in the valley.
