Cbi Team Leaves To Collect Bofors Documents

A joint team of the CBI and officers of the ministry of personnel left for Berne, Switzerland to take posession of vital secret documents relating to the controversial Bofors gun deal struck during the prime ministership of late Rajiv Gandhi. The team to Switzerland is led by CBI director Joginder Singh.

The over 1,000-page document, containing detailed money transactions of the beneficiaries of the kickbacks in the 1986 defence deal with AB Bofors of Sweden, would be handed over at a function to be held in Berne on Tuesday, according to an offical.

The official said the documents, containing details of money transactions of middlemen who had received commission for clinching the Howitzer gun deal, would be opened after they were brought here and handed over to the CBI court handling the case. The CBI had filed chargesheet in the case in 1990.

 

Swiss cantonal officials will present the documents at 1000 hrs (Swiss time) in the parliament building in Berne in a ceremony presided over by the Indian Ambassador to Switzerland.

The documents relate to bank statements of payments effected by Bofors into five different accounts in Swiss banks in connection with 8.4 billion Swedish Kroner deal entered into by the Indian Government with bofors AB, a subsidiary of Nobel Industries.
