Chandigarh aims to become solar city

With an aim to increase use of non conventional energy and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, the Chandigarh administration is planning to make Chandigarh a ‘solar city’.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has prepared the draft report and has submitted it to the Chandigarh administration.

The draft report has recommended energy efficiency measures of 20 per cent for both residential and commercial sectors.

The project would be mutually funded by the Centre with a matching grant by the Administration or Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, whoever takes up the project.

Keeping in view the ever increasing power demand of Chandigarh, UT Adviser Pradip Mehra has asked the officials to initiate procedures for the formal adoption of the project.

 

He said the central government would double the quantum of subsidy made available to other states for the same so that it could be used for sending incentives to general public for attracting and encouraging them to adopt solar panels.
