Aimed at barcoding and categorising the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats, the Thiruvananthapuram-based Tropical Botanical and Garden Research Institute (TBGRI) - Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (STEC) campus, has set up a new barcoding centre.

		</script> </DIV><p class='TableClas'>Chief minister VS Achuthanandan will inaugurate the centre tomorrow (June 11). The centre is expected to create a data base of organisms, which would be helpful in research in this regard. To begin with, various varieties of ginger and pepper will be barcoded. <BR>
</p><p class='TableClas'>Scientists point out that DNA barcoding would help identify plant and animal species, widely used in research, biodiversity studies and government regulations. It will also help them identify species from given samples.<BR>
</p><p class='TableClas'>With the new DNA barcoding centre coming up, an industry linkage would be made possible at the biotechnology research hub proposed at TBGRI-STEC. <BR></P></p></table>
