Glass usage in green buildings growing at 18%

BS Reporter Chennai/ Hyderabad

The application of glass in green and eco-friendly buildings has been growing at 18 per cent year-on-year (YoY) since the last four to five years, said Sanjay Ganjoo, vice-president of All India Glass Manufacturers Federation.

“Seeing the growth in the green buildings, we expect the consumption of glass in the sector to further go up,” Ganjoo told mediapersons on the sidelines of a seminar on ‘Application of glass in green buildings’ in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The green building market in India is growing at 30-35 per cent YoY. The domestic glass industry is currently pegged at 12 million tonne in volume or Rs 5,000 crore in value, and is growing at 20-25 per cent. Of the total glass consumption, green buildings cater to 15,000 tonne.

“Most of the glass consumption is met by the domestic players and only eight to 10 per cent gets imported. Currently, our policy makers are focusing on energy consumption. In this regard, use of glass in green buildings will be of huge benefit,” he said.
